One of the most trusted voices on radio has passed away at 90.

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=6982226&page=1

I listened to him, and enjoyed his presentation and anecdotes. The Rest of the Story was always a favorite.

He served in the US Army Air Corps, and was later a private pilot.

I wonder if his son will carry on?

RIP, and thanks Mr. Harvey.

I never liked him, especially because he decided to editorialize in his final years, and I'd be screaming, "Die, you old fool!" at the car radio. I've never understood the attraction of an old man with a quirky voice giving you the news that you can get... well... anywhere and with a lot more detail. I don't respect your radio career Mr. Harvey, but I do respect your service to our country. Thanks, and I hope you are re-united with your wife.

What have you created and given to your field? Sheesh, the arrogance! Neither of us are old enough to remember, but for an entire generation, namely that of my grandparents, the man invented a format and brought Midwestern sentimentality to the spoiled airwaves of both coasts. For that, he deserves plenty of respect, and credit.

Well his bits did begin with "news and comment"...doesn't that tell the listener what they're about to get? No use crying over spilled liquid of your choice...

Good God! Seriously?

The guy announced what he was doing....News and Comment.... millions of Americans listened to him a couple of times a day and enjoyed it. Is it all the class you can muster to insult the guy as he dies?

Respect his radio career? Seriously....the guy was the actual pioneer in news broadcasting, and like him or not, if you don't respect his accomplishments then perhaps you ought to re-examine your definition of respect. He didn't hurt anyone and was just about always positive. If he didn't have your attention why were you listening? Wishing for him to die? That's a bit off right there.

Amen! Paul Harvey did a very good job. I think every news broadcaster should take a page out to the Paul Harvey broadcasting playbook.

I, too, respected what he accomplished and how he lived his life. But at times he would make a comment that made me wonder where his head was at. One that I will never forget...

A TWA 707 landed by mistake at Ohio State University's Don Scott Field, on a 4400 foot asphalt runway. It was really a miracle that the pilot got the plane in safely, and that it was able to be flown out safely by a training pilot from Kansas City, after removing all the weight possible.

After telling us about this incident, Paul Harvey added this comment, and I think this is very close to word-for-word: "And the airlines say that they can't serve the smaller airports with their big jets."

BTW, if anyone would like to read my narrative with all the details of this incident, just send me an email via the Contact in my profile, and I'll send it to you by return email. Use the subject "707" so I don't think it is spam and delete it without reading.

He was a conservative that I could live with. There were some points he brought up that I did not agree with, but, he did make his point without arrogance. He was always very down-to-earth and trused by millions. Even when I was young, I remember him editorializing, but that is what he did.

I will miss "The Rest Of The Story." Monday's Noon comment will be sad....

Whne I was younger I enjoyed his commentaries on the news. But as I got older, I found his style rather "preachy". An article I read recently said he actually retired in 2001 or thereabouts. They were still playing his reports as of last week on our local radio station. Were these all "reruns"?

He was possessed of a very dry wit on occasion....and in this case he was kidding a little bit.

He had some serious issues with his throat, but he rebounded and picked up where he left off, and during his recovery there were several replacement/substitute hosts.

Wow, thats a bummer. I grew up listening to him on the radio and always enjoyed his distinct voice and personality. His wife pasted away not long ago, and his son has been doing the show since then. Hopefully he keeps it going.

I do remember listening to the "Rest of the Story" on ABC radio back in the day...that was radio story-telling at its best. Obviously, with the advent of the Internet, on-demand everything, and a more in-your-face zeitgeist, we live in different times. But Paul Harvey was a consummate professional who inspired me to get into radio.

Last night the Larry King Show reran a 2003 interview with Paul Harvey. I had never seen the guy before. It was kind of strange hearing the voice connected with a body. I also didn't know that he was Chicago based too. He talked just like he spoke on the radio, complete with those "pregnant" pauses. He seemed like a very interesting guy.

I grew up listening to 'The Rest of the Story' and I loved it! Mr. Harvey honored my great-grandparents on their 75th wedding aniversary with an on-air comment. He would have done so again on their 80th... sadly, they both passed away shortly beforehand.

RIP to a broadcast legend, you will be missed!
