With the economic crisis going on, people losing their jobs and getting desperate, and the ease of getting firearms in the USA, it wouldn't surprise me if such events will happen more often this year.

The short timeframe in between lets me think whether there was any connection. More probable, though, might be that the German started after he heard from the shooting in the US...
No, he was shot in a shoot out with the police. He killed 9 kids and 3 teachers in school, 1 from a hospital, 2 more people at a supermarket and later he was shot dead. He obviously took someone hostage who drove him to his hometown. About 1000 police men were involved today and several people ( especially kids) are treated in hospitals.
Absolutely shocking!!!!!
May those who died RIP and this insane maniac burn in hell forever!

The guy in Alabama didn't lose his job according to the reports.
And regarding ease of firearms in the USA, apparently they are also easily available for 17 year olds in Germany.

I'm just amazed at how little these people value life. The one in Alabama even shot and killed a small toddler. What the hell?

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Otto Schily and Wolfgang Schäuble for making this country such a safe place. I think it is great that I - as a law-abiding citizen - have to submit fingerprints for passport and ID card, are under video surveillance everywhere, have my phone, email, and internet connections stored for half a year, while people can walk around in schools and supermarkets and shoot a good dozen people.

The one and only thing I will ever agree with liberals in the US, is tighter gun control. I am sorry if I offend some that are avid "hunters", but what beast of an animal that lives in the US that requires an M-16 or an AK-47??? Paralysis Neckis Upis is a rampant disease that is an epidemic in this country. Sadly our stupidity is spreading.

My oh my, Germany has its own Columbine. The Germans must be seething. The use of an assault weapon too! It just goes to show you, mental illness has no borders and is not exported or exclusive to one country.
Is this the most deaths by one person in Germany since 1945?

1.) This wasn't the first school massacre in Germany. In 2002 a similar massacre happened in Erfurt. Others of a smaller scale followed.
2.) The weapon used by the murder was a Baretta 92 - so no assault weapon, but an "ordinary" 9mm pistol.
3.) The mad gunman in Erfurt killed 16 people and himself in 2002 and I'm sure we had our share of mad mass murders overhere, too, who murdered even more victims.

This is a horrible day. The cruelty of this attacks are incredible. I don't think we can imagine how much families are destroyed.
Its amazing how coward this bastards are as they kill always themselves so they can escape punishment. My thoughts are with the families. May victims rest in peace.
On a german newschannel they reported he didn't pass the exams while most of its classmates did. Like the other murderes they wanted revenge against the society and school.
However at one point i have to say most school systems in Europe are a total desaster and partly guilty at generating such cases IMO.

Why do you ask the question? You know he is totally right. We Germans talk to much how wrong it is that in America everyone can have a weapon, but every 2 years we have our own amok mass murders in schools and the people always had legal weapons.
In Erfurt the young guy was in a shooting club himself and in this case of today his parents were hunters and had 16 (!!!) weapons in there basement and 1 (the pistol he used) in their bedroom.
He just had to go to his parents bedroom, take the 9mm pistol, take about 200 pieces of ammunition and was ready for his crazy mass murder plans...

Why were those weapons so accessible? If they were locked in a safe, no way he would have gotten to them. We have guns at home, but they're not lying around...they're locked in a safe with restricted access. This has nothing to do with gun laws, but more to do with irresponsible adults leaving lethal weapons lying around.

Awesome video. An excellent demonstration of just how fast the appearance of a gun can be changed without affecting the function. Amazing.

B.S. It's far from being easy for a 17 year old to get (lawfully) a firearm in Germany. The fact is if someone is detemined to shoot somebody he'll find a way to get a gun no matter how easy or hard it is to obtain one -at least in a free society.
Quoting CARST (Reply 21): In Erfurt the young guy was in a shooting club himself and in this case of today his parents were hunters and had 16 (!!!) weapons in there basement
What difference does the number make besides a flashy headline? He needed only one gun to murder 15 people.
Quoting CARST (Reply 21): He just had to go to his parents bedroom, take the 9mm pistol
And here we are at the point were his parents didn't follow the laws for gun owners in Germany - the pistol should have been locked away. But laws can be broken...
