Hey all,

I recently got an external hard drive for my iMac. I set it so the time machine would back up to the external hard drive but it keeps telling me the backup failed.

Also, I can rarely connect to ichat. Most of the time I get an error message saying host unexpectedly lost, and I can't connect again for a few min. If I do connect it is very brief and I will get an error message saying something about a timeout? This happens regardless of if I send one message to someone, or multiple messages.

I should also add that our apartment complex uses a wireless provider (Airimba for those familiar) and it is awful. There are the occasional connection issues, and it is very slow. Also, the message in ichat appears as:

AIM error

An AIM service error occurred.

Error: Serv:RequestTimeout

Does anybody have any tips? I figured I'd ask here before I call the helpline.

Thanks very much!

Do you connect the HD with USB, Firewire or does it connect using wireless internet? Also what brand HD is it?

Sounds like a poor connection is causing the ichat not to work, All I can say about that is to try hard wiring your mac to the internet, otherwise you might be stuck with a poor wireless connection as long as Airimba is providing the service.

I use a USB to connect to the HD, its a Hitachi Macintosh HD, I'll have to find the manual tomorrow to give you a more specific answer.

Thank you! I was hoping that is what the issue might be.

The hard disk needs to be formatted in HFS+ (also called "Mac OS Extended (journaled)") in order to be used with Time Machine. If you just purchased it, it might be formatted in FAT.

Do format it, use Disk Utility (it can be found in Applications -> Utilities). Careful, all data you have on the external disk will be lost.

I think iChat wants a pretty solid & fast wireless connection as it is (IIRC) about twice the frame rate of Skype.

I had to use Skype when my wife first went into the hospital for leukemia as it was the only way she could have a video chat with her brother in Australia. Actually went to (the late) CompUSA and got an extended antenna for the hospital wing - prompting the hospital to roll wireless out to all of the rooms.

Skype was also needed because my brother-in-law is a diehard PC fan. We're changing him bit by bit as his wife bought an iPhone and got him interested.
