ZRH A.net Meeting 08-AUG-2009: Your Ideas?

Trying to keep the tradition of A.net meetings at ZRH alive, I am looking into organizing something for Saturday, 08-AUG-2009.

As you all may know, the former Observation Deck B is closed until 2011 for rebuilding of pier B.
This leaves Observation Deck E on Dock Midfield (E), which can be reached by shuttle bus only (on 30 minute intervals, 2 CHF); no drinks / food were available on the deck the last time I checked.
Photography of action on runway 28 will be facing into the sun.

Questions are:
- Is there interest to hold a meeting at ZRH under these circumstances at all ?
- Would it be preferred to make this a "spotting from Deck E only"-meeting or is it preferred to have some organized tour of some part of the airport ?
Options for tours on offer by the airport can be found here.
Personally I think, a return visit to SR Technics' Maintenance facility could be of interest ...
- Alternative could be, if there is enough transport capacity available, to head for one of the official spotting locations along the perimeter fence.
- Furthermore, there is the option to rent either a bicycle for 4 hours or a day or Inline skates to use the path running along runway 14.

- Some dinner (formal / informal / beer garden depending on weather) would be optional.

So, please post your reasonable wishes / ideas.
-HT

I like the restaurant "Runway 34" http://www.runway34.ch/
Been there a couple of times and it is a good spotting location for take offs runway 16 as well:

I might be able to make it to the meet, if only just for the day. If I book long enough in advance I am sure I can find a cheap LX fare from NCE to ZRH and add up a few FF elite miles to my account.

I made a stopover on my way to the LHR meet. My friend took me plane spotting not too far away from the terminals. He took me by car. I will post a few pictures. I am sure those familiar with the airport perimeter will recognize the place.

We stayed about two hours until I had to go back to the terminals to catch the flight to LHR. I had a really nice time watching all the flights departing from where we were.  airplane   cheerful

Now that my plans for school have been put back a year, I'm free to travel. I'd have to look at my schedule for then, but if I'm free, I'd be up to popping over for a visit.

Hi Holger,

So NICE to see this topic popping up there ....
Here is my view:

- Is there interest to hold a meeting at ZRH under these circumstances at all ?
Absolutely, as far as I'm concerned!

- Would it be preferred to make this a "spotting from Deck E only"-meeting or is it preferred to have some organized tour of some part of the airport ?
I for sure would love to have something set on top of the Deck E and I'm definitively with you if we can redo the SR Technics tour.

- Some dinner (formal / informal / beer garden depending on weather) would be optional.
Could be fun, but I will probably end up downtown as I did last years. Zurich is such a beautiful city!

That said, I wish we can make it, and I want Patrick as our guest for this year.

Count on me, schedule permitting, which is likely!

An attendance list is only half the story.
Like I posted in the starter, I am asking for opinions on what to do during the day i.e. "spotting only" or "some tour is a must" ...

Quoting WILCO737 (Reply 2):

Good suggestion, although it was a suggestion throughout the last 3 years, but no dinner at this place ever materialized. Also, it might be out of scope for those travelling on a budget ...

It already is less than 3 months to the proposed date.

Hi Raphael,
thanks for your reply.
Nice idea to make Patrick a (= our, including me) guest this year !

Last year I missed you guys by only 20 minutes or so as I was in the simulator at Swiss Aviation Training.

Maybe I can attend this year, but I can only let you guys know on short notice about the SR Technics tour. So do not count me in there.

Hi Holger,

thanks for the organization and the link in the Swiss Aviation thread.

I just want to remind everybody that this is the weekend of the Streetparade:
http://www.streetparade.ch/

So some might come and combine the meeting with it. And some might be deterred by it. But the ticket prices will surly be higher than on other weekends.

But count me in anyways.

Streetparade: (..)
But the ticket prices will surly be higher than on other weekends.

I just had a quick look at the route relevant for me, and fares for that weekend equal those of other weekends (+/- 3 weeks) around (I am aware that the weeekend before there is Bundestag being held in Switzerland, so that one is a no-no ...).
Also, a quick re-check of hotel rates revealed (still) affordable rates in the extended vicinity of the airport (all the way down to Oerlikon), but I did not check for downtown locations.
At present, the IBIS Messe Airport (which was a favourite among A.netters in recent years) is more expensive than the higher ranking NOVOTEL nearby (same hotel group) ...
Even the Radisson SAS within walking distance of the termnal(s) is selling at good rates.

Currently sitting in the Radisson at STN, I am off to a string of flights home in 2 hours routing STN-DUS-MUC-HAJ (the evening nonstop STN-HAJ arrives too late for my taste as I have to get up tomorrow at 0500h).

A one night hotel stay is a possibility. The other possibility is the Zurich International Youth Hostel but it's sort of far out in the boonies and probably very full during that time of the year....

I'm in for the A.net meeting on 8th Aug. Also for the SR Technics tour and for some food later. Runway 34 is an ok restaurant, the cheaper alternative would be to get something from McDonalds or BurgerKing at Rumlang and go to the spotting areas at Rümlang and Bülach.

FYI, there is a new Holiday Inn hotel near the exhibition halls at Oerlikon, which would be another possibility for those looking at a place to stay: http://www.all-hotels.com/holiday-in.../switzerland/zurich/zurich_e1.htm. The new tram 10 goes directly from the exhibition halls to the airport.
