Tour of SR Technics is booked and confirmed, so the schedule is as follows:

  • Meet from 0930h onwards;
  • Spotting from Observation deck on Dock E using the public shuttle bus, 2 CHF
  • No special tour of the airport's apron and/or to the runway cross could by secured due to operational limitations; if interested to visit, feel free to book public tour on your own.
  • Start of tour of SR Technics: 1400h, 10 CHF
  • End of tour of SR Technics: 1630h
  • End of meeting: 1630h
  • Optional: Dinner (location to be decided - maybe Runway34)

Participation for spotting from Dock E is unlimited;
Number of participants for the SR Technics tour is limited to 20.

Attendance fees (2 CHF/1.50€ for Deck E resp. 10 CHF/7€ for the tour) to be paid on the spot.

Some requirements for participation on the SR Technics tour:

  • No big bags
  • wear flat shoes, as use of (provided) safety footwear might be necessary (was not in use during my last tour of SR Technics)
  • Photography during the tour is okay, unless specifically advised contrary (during my last tour, we were asked to not take pictures of a customer's a/c in the hangar)

Nice to hear that you managed to book a tour of SR Technics, but I won’t be able to come at all. So, I have taken me off the ”maybe” list. Have a nice time, everyone!

I will have to see about arranging a hotel by the airport for the night. There are websites where we can get good rates. I am very curious about the club down there.

The only club I can think of close to the airport would be the "Alpen Rock House" which is located halfway between the main terminals and the SRTechnics facilities. It's probably not the kinda club you'd enjoy. Admission age is 16 on weekends and it's flooded by masses of drunk, annoying teenagers. I stopped going there years ago. If you want to go out, there are a lot of better clubs downtown (but you'll have to bring a packed wallet). Also, some of you might want to look at the Park Inn hotel. It's located on the other side of the airport, only a short walk from the "Heligrill" spotting location and they offer a free shuttlebus to the airport. (plus there are a couple of pizzerias and a mcdonalds loacted nearby).

I myself probably won't be able to attend, as i'll probably be in the middle of my A320 typerating training in August, plus I attended the SRT tour late last year (very recommendable).

But have fun everbybody!

Thank you. This is the name of the place, yes. I did not think it would be packed with drunk teenagers.

I am not sure I would want to go to town where it costs too much. I would rather spend part of the evening in a nice café in a spot with a scene, maybe one of the places by the water.

I am a frequent visitor to ZRH airport. I will have to tell my friend Nicolas Dirac (First to Fly the A380) about the meet when he gets back from the First A380 flight to Paris CDG. He lives and works in Zurich. I am sure he would enjoy meeting with the group.

I am not sure about which hotel I will pick. I generally bid on Priceline at the last minute for good deals always in very good hotels.

Please keep me on the "maybe" list and the SR Technics tour for now.

You are right, the flight between LYS and ZRH is listed as today on a RJ. Will be my first time on Swiss. My other experiences so far with this plane was with AF and LH, so I will for sure enjoy the 2+3 layout!

Too bad that the ERJ170 is not scheduled between BIQ and LYS...

See you!

Plenty of nice places in town by the lake and also along the river Limmat with reasonable prices for drinks, especially in sunny weather conditions. Summer evenings in Zürich are awesome, with lots of people about. You can take a walk along the lake, starting at the Bellevue. Or alternatively, you could check out the "Wings" bar at the river Limmat. It's a Bar decorated with old Swissair and other aviation stuff.

I can guarantee you won't get bored, plenty of options!

have fun! Big grin

Is that also valid for the day (evening) of the Streetparade ?

Definitely yes, except that there are a bit more folks around on that day then usual. But even along the lake, after about 6pm, things return to normal. And the folks taking part in the street parade are funny people, of (almost) all ages, from many nations. Business in the city generally is as usual. THIS is why the parade was moved from the actual centre to the lakeside, as it that way is no space problem. True, during the day, their "music" tends to be a bit loud .

No cheap fares available!

Fares between GVA and ZRH only usually are very high.
Should be cheaper to fly NCE-ZRH.
Or if you really want to fly into GVA, take the train to Zürich ... ?

I stayed at the RadissonBlu (formerly RadissonSAS) last year in the inauguration week.
Nice hotel, very conveniently located, good breakfast. Nice rooms with free LAN/WiFi.
However, no views of the runway / apron to speak of.

Never been to the Moevenpick.
The Park Inn is on the west side of the airport and should be okay for a (little bit longer) walk to the airport's fence for spotting. Never stayed at the hotel yet, but I also consider(ed) it. However, without a car, one is bound to use the hotel shuttle - a fact I personally hate ...
(and no free LAN/WiFi at the park Inn).

No views of the airport from the Hotel itself, but a short walk will take you close to the departure end of runway 16 (albeit with very limited views) In about 20 minutes, you can make it to the Heligrill location, close to where the ParkInn is located. There's also a tram stop nearby which will take you to the airport in just a few minutes.

The ParkInn would be the best choice spotting wise, because, like i mentioned earlier, it's just a short walk from one of the best spotting locations (Heligrill). Although you're dependant on their shuttle bus to get to/from the airport.

The Radisson would be the most convenient option, since it's located pretty much in the middle of the airport, adjacent to the terminals. However, it's almost impossible to reach any good spotting locations other than the viewing terrace (unless you want to spend a fortune on a taxi).

The Moevenpick, as I mentioned above, is a little of both.

They all have their pros and cons, personally, I would go with the best price.

Did a research on opodo for a two nights stay NCE-ZRH 07-09 august and found this...
Air Berlin (via DUS) 222,90 €
Swiss / Lufthansa (direct / via FRA) 225 € | 253 € 08-09 august
Swiss (direct) 267 €

Still expensive but much better  Wink
