This is a question that boggles my mind. What is the deal with rubbernecking and why do people feel that everything is their business?

Today I was driving along on CA-87 at a safe distance behind this Honda with some guy following me very closely. Suddenly the Honda slammed on his brakes, I slammed on mine, the guy behind me drove swerved into the median and this big Ford truck started skidding out of control (all I remember was hearing screeching tires and seeing a big Ford oval in my rearview).

This all happend because someone had decided 70mph was too fast to see why a CHP had pulled someone over. So they figured 25-30mph was good. They nearly caused a 4+ car pileup because of their stupidity.

Come on now everyone. If there is a fender bender its probably is really none of your business and you don't need to creep along at 5mph on the expressway to see whats up.

I hate when this happens too!
People are always looking for action and a cheap frill!
It really pisses me off.

Hey Adam84, your a local guy.

In a lot of instances it's a sort of concertina effect. When one person slows down to look, the following car has to slow down too. So while he's slowed down he may as well have a look and that causes the next car to slow down etc, etc.
Mind you have you never gone past an accident and thought "Thank God that wasn't me"?

The police would rather you crawl by than blow by them at 70MPH & 3 inches off their ass while they are stopped. You are supposed to slow down, whether you are rubbernecking or not when you pass a stopped officer. It's the law in many cases because so many have lost their lives when some moron hits them at highway speeds. I can't see the guy slamming on his brakes to see the other guy pulled over, if everyone watched ahead they would have had plenty of time to slow down.

Rant: Off  Yeah sure

Oh gawd, I can just see it now. CA87 is probably one of the worst highways that something like that can happen to you on. I'm amazed that an accident didn't happen there from what you described happening. Stupid drivers really annoy me, I feel your anger.

of course i don't drive, but when i do drive i think it would take a lot of flashing lights to get my attention off the road.

Laugh out loud ...lol, I wish that were true. But I guarantee you will be like everyone else and the last thing you will be looking at is the road when you are driving. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Rubberneckers are the reason why I would like to replace the stock bumpers on my truck with ones that are made from Drilling Pipe stock.

If somebody runs into me I want to make sure they end up worse for it then I am.

L-188, I feel ya, man...

I was driving on I-94, going over a bridge here in Milwaukee a couple years back, and had to swerve and brake hard in order to avoid some stupid moron who was practically turned around in the driver's seat of his car, going about 5 mph down the MIDDLE of the road, staring back at something on the other side of the freeway. If I'd been driving the HUMMER I am now on the waiting list for (Darth Vader black, Sidewinder missile launchers, optional turret and reinforced cattleguard front bumper), I'd have sped up when I saw him.  Smile

Why do people rubberneck? I suppose it's human nature to look at spectacles of interest. Although I myself fight the urge, because I don't necessarily want to see anything that will give me nightmares when I drive by the scene of an accident. However, I am willing to bet that rubberneckers are the cause of more chain reaction accidents than anything else.

While driving down one of main roads here, I saw a cop that had pulled somebody over. They had pulled off the road on to the median to stay out of harms way. About an hour later I drove by again and someone had spun a 180 and smacked into the back of the police car!  Nuts Talk about rubbernecking!

That happens more often than you could imagine. It's sad. Which is why we don't see crawling by at 10MPH while you watch the pretty strobe lights such a bad thing... it's hard to spin out of control at those speeds and kill us. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

See thats the thing. The guy who slowed down to turtle speeds almost caused a huge pileup right next to the officer (thereby putting him in more danger). I can understand slowing down, but slamming on your brakes down to 25mph from 70mph.

Yes I usually slow down alittle bit when there is a cop off the side, or I get into the opposite lane an cruise on by. But I dont say "Look....a cop" and slam on the brakes on the highway.

Im over it now though, I was just glad I was not rear ended by the 2 impatient @sses behind me who felt the need to sit 6 feet off my bumper at 70mph.

Why Do People Rubberneck?

Like IL96M said, it's human nature.
It's the same reason that reality TV and shows like Cops, Americas Most Wanted, Worlds Wildest Police Chases, etc etc are so popular.

They WANT to see someone having a scuffle with a cop.
They WANT to see a dead body all cut up.
Well, they don't, but they do.....if you get what I mean.
It's like a dare; something out of the ordinary.
Sadly, too often, someone elses misfortune becomes someone elses entertainment.

But there's also a positive side. People who drive past a scene of an accident often have the reality of it thrown in their face and they become more aware of their own driving habits.  Smile

Adam84:

True, 70MPH down to 25 is not advisable. In fact not even legal, I would at least warn them for impeding traffic if it was on a clear interstate. You do the right thing, get out of the lane closest to the officer or at least slow down, 55MPH is good on an interstate. But my point was the guy probably didn't slam on his brakes... if he did the officer would have flagged him down because he is driving like a moron. My guess was he coasted by and you and a few others weren't paying attention while cruising at 70MPH and didn't see him until it was necessary to floor the brake pedal. I wasn't there, I don't know. But slowing down is not a bad thing and you should watch out for it. Because often our backup is watching traffic go by and if you decide pass by at anything over the limit I wouldn't count on a warning. Dumbasses rear-ending cruisers at highway speeds is a serious problem.
