Quoting YVRLTN (Thread starter):
Supermarine Spitfire / Triumph Spitfire

Quoting YOWza (Reply 1):
There was a Saab fighter and a car both named the Viggen.

Also, the Ford Mustang was named after the P-51, even though the automobile used a horse as its logo.

Quoting YVRLTN (Thread starter):
Cessna 404 Titan / Leyland Titan

There is also a Nissan Titan pickup truck.

Quoting YVRLTN (Thread starter):
Piper PA23 Aztec / Pontiac Aztec

The latter travesty is spelled "Aztek" (though many prefer "Asstek.")

Apparently, you were off on both the era and platform; note: Dtw9's post below. You must've been thinking about the Olds Starfire which was their first subcompact that rolled out in 1975. It shared the same platform as the Chevy Vega/Monza, Pontiac Astre/Sunbird and Buick Skyhawk.

I don't recall the Starfire as far back as the '50's but I sure do remember the ones from the early '60's and they were 'sssssssmokin HOT!

Back in the day, in the ATL terminal, there was a rotating platform local Oldsmobile dealer Mitchell Motors installed that almost always had the hottest new Starfire displayed on it------that is------- until the Toronado debuted in 1966.

That's also what I thought. But then I googled - too hastily - and found only the Alfa 147.

Unlike a few friends I was never an Alfa fan. In fact they are rather few here in Scandinavia where we have seven month of winter and a million tons of salt spread on the roads. I think it's different today, but in the 70'es and 80'es Alfa fans seemed to change car more frequently than they changed shirt. They turned into dust at record speed - the cars, not the shirts.
