So I'll be visiting Montreal in a couple of weeks. I've been told that Quebec City might also be worth a visit. I'd make it a day trip.

Considering that I don't want to rent a car, what do you think would be best to do Montreal-Quebec and back in one day? I've looked at fares by plane for Air Canada but they're not exactly cheap (about CAD$600 per person, and we're 2). The train would be much cheaper (about $100 per person) but takes 3 hours each way.

Is there any option I'm missing? Maybe a LCC that I don't know of? Amadeus doesn't show anything else, but who knows - I thought it's better to ask than being sorry afterwards.

Unfortunately, short of driving the only cheap way to get from Montréal to Québec is train or bus, both of which take a bit longer than driving or flying.

That's the bus service. There appears to be a bus leaving Montréal Station Centrale at 06:00 and arriving at Québec at 09:15 with returns from Québec at 18:30, 19:30 and 20:30 with arrivals at 21:45, 22:45 and 23:45, respectively. The round-trip price on the bus is about $85.

In addition to what LH423 said, given you are limited on time, it might actually be an idea to rent a car, as it can be done a little under 3 hours and Enterprise has some excellent deals usually, especially if you're planning on doing it during a week-end.

Be aware the train station in Quebec City is way out-of-the way, a good 20-25$ cab ride at least so factor this in if you take the train (with the price). Bus might be your only option. Day tours might be available, you can enquire at your hotel and they should be able to provide some information.

Last solution is to hire a Montreal a.net member to drive you there! Just kidding Big grin

Not sure what you're thinking of, here. The Quebec train station is right in the middle of the lower old city, basically right exactly where you want to be. You may be thinking of the Charny stop, which is on the other side of the river?

If it comes down to train or bus, the train will be more comfortable, with better scenery and not generally subject to traffic. If you're sure you don't want to rent a car, then I'd say that's the way to go. Really doesn't seem worth it to do the Air Canada thing.

Next flight.... who knows.
