In the Nissan Cube thread, this was posted by BMI727:

I am sick and tired of car companies continually believing that we want cars that look and drive like IPods!!

For the record: I saw the Cube on display at the Portland Auto Show and nearly lost my cookies when I saw it. Worse than the Smart Car for looks. But, this is what I would expect from the same company that brought us the Murano and the Infinity version.

My rant is: why do car manufacturers and electronics manufacturers assume that every human on the face of the Earth has an iPod? I see so many things from stereos to cars to portable video players with an iPod dock. What about those of us that love our digital music but wanted to pay a heck of a lot less for it? I have a 4G RCA mp3 player that looks like an iPod and serves the same function as an iPod but is not one. I have to plug it into an auxiliry jack on the stereo or use a cassette converter if I want to play it in my car.

Don't get me wrong: If you own an iPod, good for you. That was your choice. But, these knuckleheads that manufacture products assuming that every last one of us own or even want an iPod are out of their minds, IMO.

Thoughts?

It's because the BULK of media players are ipod's and people want to take their music with them, hence car companies cater to them. It's not as if they'd sell alot of Zune adapters  duck

Why do people who purchase a car in a country where 70-80% of the market buys from one firm (not even counting their phones) assume that the OEMs are going to cater to the minority 20-30%?

Apple has sold around 250 million iPods so far, and is thus the market leader by a long way. You don't ignore a market that size.

Probably the only smart decision GM made: put audio-in ports in their stock radios. I'm an iPod user myself, but I do understand that not everyone uses them. With an audio-in port, you can listen to anything.

If you're going to take potshots at a company, make sure you spell it right. It's Infiniti.

I think it is great that there is iPod docking in cars and all these accessories for them. However, why not also have an alternative available at the same time and say something like "docking for iPod or mp3 player"? That, to me, makes much more sense. We have a car entertainment store here that sells stereos with both iPod docking and mp3 ports. So, if you have one or the other, you are not limited to which stereo you can buy. I like that idea much better.

Besides, serching for accessories is confusing for mp3 players. Maybe I should just break down and buy an iPod...

I didn't notice. Thanks for the correction!

Because the bluk of car ipod systems are based on the ipod connector. However, I agree. I would like to see a usb interface, that would be cool. But it again boils down to why spend money on something that wont get used, ie, the other mp3 interface.

I would think it would be simple to, in addition to the iPod dock, include a cord for normal 1/8" audio aux in. Granted it won't have the same interaction as with the iPod (ability to control menus, volume etc etc) but at least for non-iPod folk they can use the car audio system easily. The hard stuff is already there with the iPod dock, just add a simple little cord.

Just my 2 cents

There is a growing number of cars that offer an iPod jack and a USB port as well. Some like Honda, even have a place for an SD memory card.

I look at it the other way round: I didn't own an iPod before buying my first car with an iPod dock, because I don't listen to music while walking around. But after getting that car, I bought an iPod because it was the easiest way to get my music into the car.

Oh, the iPod dock was an option - and I picked it, then went buying the iPod. And it also has an Aux port for those who have other kinds of MP3 players. I've even seen cars with USB ports. So I don't think it's a problem - car makers are simply adapting to the market.

I can understand the frustration of people without iPods. However, as well as the suggestion that the iPod probably has the biggest market share, I think a key reason that car manufacturers want to put specifically iPod docks in their cars is because it enables them to affiliate their product/brand with the extremely powerful Apple/iPod brand and its innovative and 'chic' connotations.
