Hello

Since a while ago, I've been considering to change my last name. And after having found the rather interesting name Casablancas, I would might consider changing my last name to that, next year. Since Casablanca is my 2nd home town...

The problem is, that there's a rather famous family with the name Casablancas, and I'm wondering if they have some sort of copyright to that name, that would make it impossible for anyone not belonging to the family to take their name?

In England it would be. You can change you name by deed pole and from that forwards, quite legally, you could be known as Lufthansa Casablancas if you like. Sadly I have no clue how it works in Sweden.

It should definitely be possible, at least it would be in the UK as Offloaded has already said.

Personally, I want to steal Bart Simpson's idea and change my last name to Kickass.

Lufthansa Casablancas

That would be a great name  rotfl

Why do you want to change your name? From what I know it is VERY difficult to change your last name here in Germany. It is not impossible, but very difficult and you need VERY good reasons to do so and then it might be considered.

I wanted to change my name to Deltoid Widget but then I thought of the reaction it might bring, here on a.net. I mean, you all might think that I was a fanboy, or something.  Wink  duck

I am not sure if it makes a difference that I’m not born in Germany, but I am now in the process of changing my name in Germany, and many phonecalls haven’t said it’s not possible. And yes, I have a reason for changing it.

The easiiest way to change a name in Germany is, get married and take the wife's name.

Otherwise, it is very, very difficult unless you have an obscene (like F*ck with an i you can change to F*ck with a u or an a) or otherwise funny name like Dummkopf, then it should be OK.

I guess it is. I had a friend, she came from Poland and we German were pretty much unable to say her last name, so she was allowed to change it and she did.
