Perhaps if the fertilizer had been present together with fuel oil and a couple of other ingredients required to make an ANFO IED, there might have been a bomb. All that there really was is a car with some empty plastic bags.

Big story - not!!

a car (with northern irish number plates) with empty fertilizer bags in the boot along with plans of city buildings, and when stopped for questioning it drove off at high speed, later found abandoned in north london.

it is a little suspicious...

It would be highly unusual for Irish terrorists to attack the Royal Family or anything associated with it. The IRA found to their cost after the murder of Lord Mountbatten how counterproductive it is - Patriot Games notwithstanding. World opinion is invariably outraged. Imagine what opinions there would be about an attack at a Royal funeral?

agreed - I don't think they would be stupid enough to do it. But I think that some of these splinter groups from the IRA etc, such as the "real IRA" and the like, aren't as concerned about public opinion and who gets cross about their actions.
I do think an attack was unlikely, but I bet they were thinking about it...

well it wouldnt be the ira as such but the splinter groups such as the real ira, this move wouldnt have surprised me, recentley the ira decommissioned more weapons and the real ira splinter group werent pleased with this move.

there are still terrorists on both sides that dont want peace and what better time to strike when the country is focusing on the queen mother who stood for everything these terrorists dispise, strong british government, freedom and bravery?

It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit

By the standards of terrorism, the various Northern Irish groups are the most professional in the world, particularly on the Republican side. Don't forget that the "Real" and "Continuity" versions of the IRA were formed out of disaffected Provos. Public opinion is still important to these groups. I would doubt it could be one of them.

If; IF this proves to be true, it would be more likely an even smaller, more radical grouping.
