Im expecting 2 things to happen here- a few people reply with straighfoward answers, or we drag this one out for days with people saying what they gave their mother for her 50th birthday.

My Moms 50th birthday is a little over 2 months away.

What should I get? Nothing over the top, just limited to something I can pick up at a store and cover in wrapping paper.

I hope this gets interesting

Straight up:

I say one of two things:

Get all the pictures you can and put then on a memory card. And get one of those digital picture frames and give that as a gift. Memorys make great gifts and my mom loved it.

Or if she is not that type of person:

Jewelery (something nice like earrings or a necklace) but not something you get for an anniversary or Christmas. Flowers and a nice dinner

Anything the US and EU build the Russians do it better! i.e. TU-144 vs Concorde and TU-154 vs The 727...

A 22 year old from Abercrombie & Fitch for a couple of hours! Big grin Big grin Big grin

Just kidding of course, be careful, women are not always that keen on celebrating their 50th. I would go low key.

I like the above idea of a digital frame with lots of family pics. That should score you a lot of points.

That is exactly what I gave as a gift to a good friend of mine. I think it was perfect, and she sure loved it! So it's a thumbs up from me.

Do you live in the same town as your mother?

Don't be so conventional, and don't give your mom a bunch of old photos thereby signifying that at 50 her best days are behind her. Sheesh.  Yeah sure

Come up with something to surprise and delight your mom... something that the two of you can share and have happy memories of.

For my Mom's 50th birthday, I came home (about 400 miles each way) and took her to get a (very tasteful but fairly large) tattoo.

For my Mom's 60th birthday, I took her to Reno Nevada. It was her first time on a jet airplane and her first time seeing the desert... or anything West of the Mississippi River for that matter.

I'm not saying you should do exactly these same things, but these are things my Mom and I both enjoyed and memories we'll always cherish.

My uncle gave my mom a huge, singing card. On the front, it talked about the "F" word. It opened up, and it said something about the "F" word being fifty-- then the card broke into song. It was along the lines of "You're really f*$%ing old! You're really f*$%ing old!" ..and on and on, poking about turning 50 years old.

Was hysterical...she loved it and hated it at the same time. =D
