ATL Passenger Rail Schedule; 1951

Just look at all these trains. Compare then to now. ATL only has two trains a day (one to MSY and one to NYC), and MGM has no rail service whatsoever.

Before there was Atlanta there was Marthasville, and before that just a spot in the map called Terminus, where several railroad lines ended. Atlanta's history with rail goes all the way back to it's very beginnings.

Southern Railway hasn't served the South in years, but its "legacy" lives on-I smile a little every time I see a boxcar with SR stenciled on the side. Of course, the railways are mostly a memory for many Atlantans since even the many termini have been demolished to make way for 'progress'.

FWIW at least Atlanta has the Crescent! We could be doing much worse.

That's true. Houston, for example, only sees six weekly trains...total.

You know, I've lived a couple miles away from the museum all my life but I've never been there. I think they're near Buford Hwy someplace...should go check them out if it's worth seeing.

Houston lost rail service but at least parts of the station was incorporated into Minute Maid Park. I believe the only thing that remains from our station is a small cabin near the Mitchell St. bridge

Yeah on Buford just off of Pleasant Hill. Very nice place, well worth a visit.

If you pan around the area it's obvious there used to be a station here.

I had the (mis)fortune to use that Amshack once. It's under a freeway overpass, and it looked very unappealing after a glorious day aboard the Sunset Limited. I don't understand why Amtrak insists on making a hub in New Orleans--Houston or even Atlanta may be a better choice. For its size, Atlanta should have service to Chicago...perhaps a Miami-Chicago service if Amtrak ever gets the funding, equipment, political green light.

During the 90s, when ATL hosted the Intermodal Expo which took place around April each year, usually UP had their business train parked at / underneath the Omni. There was also an exhibition of new raiil cars by manufactureres like Greenbrier. If you follow the rail lines on the picture (scrol upwards) the location can be seen.

Once, I think it was hosted by UP, there was a rail excursion with a steam locomotive and that departed from a station near the Atlanta Underground.

N.O isn't really a "hub" per se. It's a large destination city for Amtrak, but not really a hub. Thank the geographical location of N.O for the amount of trains it receives. It's at the end of the CN mainline from Chicago, the end of the Norfolk Southern mainline from D.C, and it's the last city on the SP/UP Sunset Route from Los Angeles. Passenger trains have been running on all three of these routes for over 100 years. Also, N.O has always supported passenger rail well. Like ATL, it's a railroad town.

Houston is too far West to be a good connecting center for trains going East and the travel time from Houston to the Chicago hub is much longer than it is from N.O. Also, the most direct and fastest route to get from Houston to D.C by rail is via New Orleans. I agree that Houston needs more train service, but it'll never be an Amtrak hub, and it never was.

Atlanta is in a much better position than Houston to be a hub for passenger rail but unfortunately, most of the lines around ATL are heavily congested by freight traffic, and the freight lines are very opposed to any additional Amtrak service in the area. There's not even a remote chance of an ATL-CHI or ATL-JAX train (both former pre-Amtrak routes) due to opposition from the freight railroads. It would cost millions upon millions, at the very least, to get the tracks ready for passenger rail. Best chance for ATL is another train to D.C, in my opinion.
