It looks like the previous thread was locked so I am starting a new one.

The QE2 is being moved to dry dock prior to her possible steaming to South Africa to be used as a luxury hotel in Cape Town during the next two years.

See this story

QE2 inspection: Cape Town calling

Queen Elizabeth 2 will be drydocked on Friday for a vigorous marine inspection before tentatively steaming to Cape Town, South Africa, where it will stay for 18 months as a luxury hotel operated by Nakheel, XPRESS has learnt.

Looking at the ship tracker site she is now located at Dubai Maritime City at Al Mina sitting on her own at a pier there. He colour is navy blue/purple.

By blowing up the map, I noticed that the Al Mina site corresponds to the Dubai dry docks so ths confirms the newspaper article. The QE2 is already in dry docks for inspection.

If any A.netters in Dubai could get some pictures it would be wonderful. I have noi idea how easily Al Mina can be accessed it at all. I usppose she will be moved again at some time or other and docked back at Port Rashid before they steam her down to South Africa.

Thank you very much.

I'm not surprised the QE2 will be moved from Dubai to another location. The Sunday papers have run different stories over the past 2 weeks concerning the economic down turn in Dubai. One of the victims is the QE2, as plans to turn it into a floating hotel in Dubai have been cancelled.

Could this possibly be in anticipation of the World Cup that's going to be held there next year?

Yes this is the plan. I am still waiting to see it happening.

As of today, no QE2 Commodores that we know have been asked to sail the Ship to South Africa. Sailing the QE2 is not something that can be improvised. Unlike her younger sisters Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, she is an old ship and quite tough to manouver. She needs tug assistance at every port.

Any cruise ship captain who has never steamed her in that uneasy part of the world could easily land her on a sand bar or a reef. Not counting the pirates circling in numbers by the Horn of Africa waiting to capture large ships and tankers for ransom.

Good news for the Queen. And it wont be the first time she would be the flagship of the swimming hotels at a major sports event.

QE2 does not show up on the map. (btw QM2 doesnt show up, too - she´s docked in Hamburg again). Why is that?

Yep. QE2 was showing as a little blue square until this morning until at some point she got taken off. I suspect they have stopped her transmission equipment and she cannot report to tracking satellites until she will come out of dry dock.

Queen Mary 2 is showing at sea bound for New York City (bridge cam).

Leezyjet, I would be really happy to see pictures of the Ship in dry dock.
That is if you can get near there. I am sure she must be visible from somewhere nearby. She is so huge! They do not have another one like her in the UAE for sure!  Big grin

If it is sailing from Dubai to South Africa she will sail far away from the area where the pirates are active.

You are absolutely right. QE2 will be sailing to the South so no risk of encounters with pirates.
