Hi,
I'm not a big movie buff. Hell lat movie I saw in theatre was Star Trek and that's just cause my friend dragged me. Wait.. I did see Bruno with my girlfriend... That's a movie that reminds me why most movies made nowadays are a waste of time and money.
However... District 9 seems like the movie I've been waiting to see ever since I saw "Apollo 13" (with Tom Hanks) and said "Wow... what a movie". I think District 9 looks amazing. I can't wait to see it.
What do you guys think of it? Will it be a good movie? Rotten Tomatoes gives it 100%

Just saw it...pretty bad ass. I go to movies every Saturday morning (live across the street from an AMC 30), and this was the chosen flick this week. Creative idea, though I must say it was different than I expected, but in a good way...I did not expect it to me as good as it was. Definitely a good flick to see in the theater.
However, I fail to see how Joburg to be any worse with aliens running around

Interesting movie. I'd rank it above average.
Also pretty bloody (though not unnecessarily so) and reinforced my decision not to go to med school.

Well then let me be the first to say:
Wow...what a movie!
I, like SW733, go to the movies every week. I actually didn't have great desire to watch the movie until I started hearing that it was good. Now, walking out of it, I'd say the reviewers were correct. It is by all means an incredible movie, I loved it. In fact, to be honest, I'd say it could be the movie I most enjoyed all year.

I went with my sister and her boyfriend on Sunday and it was AMAZING! Though my sister had to walk out about half way since the shaking camera was making her nauseous. Though in my opinion it was pretty tame when compared to movies like "Cloverfield" and "Blair Witch Project". Plus it was really only during the first half that it seemed to shake. I agree with Us330 in the blood and gore aspect. Though it's not really enough to lose your lunch over. It seems clear from the ending that there is a sequel in the works...

I saw it last Sunday and I'm a big SciFi buff.
I loved the first part because the actor (our hero) is brilliant - and he's never acted before. He is Afrikaans (Dutch), and really nailed that type of doofus perfectly.
I did not like some of the 'evil corporation' type stuff - it's been done to death before. But in the "B" movie tradition, it deserves it's place as a summer blockbuster.
It's also amazing how well the movie looks given a very low budget for special effects.
I have mixed feelings about recommending this movie. It lacks the ominosity of 'Cloverfield', doesn't make sense in many parts, but it 's better than most of the junk out there.
You will enjoy this movie if you go in with low expectations. I also think the sequel will be much better.
The IMHO summary:
1. Lots of action for guys.
2. Clever beginning - hipsters will look knowingly at each other.
3. Liberal Arts types will marvel at the metaphors for alienation.
4. Some touching scenes and cute aliens to keep your date happy.
5. Fellow Geeks - stay way! This is not a SciFi movie, despite aliens and spaceships.
6. Great SciFi begets wonder, awe, fear, fantasy and good science. Not this movie.
7. 'Cloverfield' was better. Enough with the handheld cameras, please!
8. See the movie for the debut of a very funny actor.

Not quite true, he's just never done any big time stuff before, but I am assuming that's what you meant. He was actually in the short film that inspired District 9, as well as a bunch of amateur stuff ranging back to his school days.

By the time I got to the theater, the only seats left were the ones right up close to the screen. And I'm prone to get sick from movies, even when the camera doesn't shake that much. So...not the most fun thing in the world. I didn't have to walk out, but I had to shut my eyes for about half of the first half of the movie. The second half of the movie (after he went back to the District) was easier - I only missed about a quarter of that.
As for the movie itself (the parts I saw, at least): certainly an original storyline, and it looked a lot more expensive than it probably was. But it just didn't have that hook that sucked me in (something that's becoming quite rare these days, unfortunately). So I'd say good, but not great.

Slow pacing, obvious ending (a sequel to this movie is definitely in the works), and the goofy aliens looked like a cross between a cockroach and a lobster. I'd save money and simply rent it from Netflixs when it's available in a few months.
