A US woman found after being abducted as a girl in 1991 gave birth to two children fathered by her alleged kidnapper, police say.

Jaycee Lee Dugard and the children, aged 11 and 15, were kept in a "hidden backyard within a backyard".

no  How can this poor woman face a normal life after this?

I was reading about this.
It's like the U.S. version of Fritzl. I can only hope that all three girls will be taken to some place where they can try to live a normal life, away from the media and press that would undoubtedly hound them.
The sad thing is that because of the age of the girls, 11 and 15, I don't think a "normal life" will ever be possible.

The couple that did this deserves to rot in prison.

Just read this story and shocking that this happened so close by.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090828/...p_on_re_us/us_kidnapped_girl_found

The case broke after Garrido was spotted Tuesday with two children as he tried to enter the University of California, Berkeley, campus to hand out religious literature.

People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.

Sick religious nuts that kidnapped and raped in the name of their "God".
SICK!

Actually 'Fly, I don't think that was quite the case (taken from your yahoo link):

Quote:
People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.

"In the last couple years he started getting into this strange religious stuff. We kind of felt sorry for him," said Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc. in Pittsburg, Calif., who bought business cards and letterhead from Garrido's printing business for the last decade.

He only became a religious nut several years ago, well after he already kidnapped her. The real question is, what was his and his wife original motives?

Anyway, this guy and his wife deserve to live their end of days in peace...

...in a prison cell.

The more I read, the more disturbing it is...
Got curious, and used Google to get the guy's address, then find the place on satellite view. Now I'm even more creeped out, so many homes so close!

A news story late today notes he may be a suspect in the murder of 2 prostitutes, their bodies were dumped near where he worked at the time of their deaths.

This and other child abductions and long term confienement and abuses of children or adults suggests a number of serious issues in our society.
We can no longer put into or keep the mentally ill, like this guy was, in institutions.
A person with such a problem can more easliy move around, can do such crimes with less restricitons as not confiined to a town or neighborhood where many may know them.
Neighbors, family members and others around such persons may or are fearful of reporting suspisious beheaviors to the police or social services as may be harrassed, assulted, sued. Those around such persons, including family members are in denial or cannot fathom they could be involved with such beaviors.
The breakdown of the family, especially extended family that lives close by.
They are very skilled at keeping the nosey away and controlling all those around them.
The breakdown of government social and protective services. Cut budgets, poor pay, overloaded and sometimes lazy social workers and parole officers all make it easier to get away with such acts.
The legal difficulties in dealing with sex criminals including limits on terms in jail, privacy rights and related issues.
It may be nearly impossible to deal with these issues, even if more money was available. We indeed must make changes to reduce the risks of these rare but horrible contol and abuse of other humans.

I heard a little of the mother and stepfathers story..I cannot imagine the heartache and pain they went through. After this many years they must certainly given up hope..The stepfather stated that the mother every christmas would cry continuously for a week and the stress of it all ended their marrage. This scumbag cannot ever get what he deserves in my opinion. Even the death penalty is too good for what he put these people and the girl through. I only hope this girl can her family can salvage what is left of their lives.

ended their marrage.

Wll I read the story on my Blackberry last night and it even stated that the father was the suspect for many of the years of the investigation! So how does he feel know having a bad reputation finally swing into his favor? God bless that man for dealing with a lot of crap I would imagine.

Also...

I see that all the time with teenagers and heavy drug use. "My son said he doesn't use drugs so I believe him" I see that several times a year.

I know what you mean. As a teacher I am told that I have to report any signs of abuse or neglect. I have been told that it is best to just keep your mouth shut. I have seen teachers and schools sued over this issue. If you are correct in your assumption you did a good thing, if you are wrong you may lose your job and you will be sued by the accused. I have seen it happen more than once.

That seems to be the case.

Some people are good at that. If I saw a bunch of tents in somebody's yard in California I would assume that a gang of hippies was living there.

That is a real head scratcher. The wife was involved in the original kidnapping so she knew what was going on.

True. Though I think for starters, once he's convicted, is to put him and his wife on public display (locked in a cage, like a gorilla) for anyone to walk up to them and do what they want. These freaks need to be identified for who they are and what they did, and let society deal with them.

I can't say my true thoughts here because I would be flamed and banned from the website.

I am thankful this girl has been found alive. But, there are so many other children out there who have been missing for so long. It would be great to have those children reunited with their families as well. My thoughts also go out to those families who are still missing their children.
