Mine is set to turn off at 11pm and on at 6am. I used to leave it on all the time and it definitely slowed it down a lot until I would turn it off and restart it.

I also turn my cell phone off at night, unless I'm expecting a call. I cancelled my "landline" at home a long time ago. If someone needs to call me at night when it is off, it goes to voice-mail and I get it in the morning.

I'm working for the railways as a casual on-call, If I turn off my phone, I don't get shifts! That said It doesn't stop me from getting boozed and passing out, It just means if I answer the phone I'm less likely to know what I'm talking about and I have to ring back later!

I leave it on. Why? In case in dire straits I need to use it. I don't have time to wait for it to turn on. You never know if an emergency arises that a family member or friend needs to get in contact with you.
As far as your phones "slowing down" or "having issues with the phone"...I'd say leaving your phone on is the least of your concerns.

I leave mine on for the sole fact that it's my alarm clock in the morning. It does get annoying when my drunk college friends send me messages or call me at 3 in the morning (sometimes I'm up that late but no when I have my 8:30 class). If my gf uses her phone as the alarm clock and she has to wake up near the same time I do, then yes I turn it off. I like to kill the batteries on my electronics at least once a week, and then charge them fully in one sitting.

I always keep mine on since I do not have a landline. When I'm sleeping it's on vibrate because waking up to Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies" at 600am can be a bit shocking to the system.

I think the alarm will turn the phone on...you should try it...I remember buying a phone in OZ last year, a cheap $40 phone and it turns on itself when the alarm goes off

I'm sure most phones these days switch on with the alarm. I know my Nokia E51 does, it asks if the phone should be switched on, then the PIN must be entered.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I certainly would, but it depends which of my phones I'm using! I have an HTC Touch Dual, and that won't switch itself on for the alarm, so if I want to be woken up then I leave it on, but turn it into airplane mode so I'm not woken up by push emails from quasi-nocturnal coursemates, tearful calls from tired and emotional friends, and early morning text messages from shift-working friends.
Currently, however, that phone is not working (I can't even send it off for repair until I've moved house next week, or I'd have to drive 250 miles just to collect the thing!), so I'm back to my trusty Sony Ericsson W810i, which does switch itself on for the alarm, so I can switch it off at night.
There's little for me at the moment which is so important that it can't wait until morning, and if there was something exceptionally crucial, my immediate family can ring my landline.

I never turn mine off. It's rare for somebody to call me while im sleeping. On the few occasions it has happened it was due to an emergency. I don't have a landlines so it's my only form of communication with the outside world.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW CHAT OPERATOR
One time, I got this text at 4AM, so I woke up, replied to the text, and went back to sleep again. Then at 415AM I woke up again, asking myself, did I really replied? So I checked my sent items and turned out I actually DREAMED sending a text back! The text I dreamed sending didn't even make sense to what the one I received said True story.
Since then, I turn it off when I go to sleep, I occasionally find out halfway during the day that it's still off!
PS, I don't do sounds on my phone, just the vibrating function.

I use it as an alarm clock so it stays on over night, I do not get many calls at night so that has never been a problem. I don't have a land line in my dorm so I figure its important to have a phone available quickly all the time.
