So, did anyone watch the Apple event? How do you like the news?

- new iPod Shuffle colors
- iPod Classic size bump
- iPod Nano gets a camera
- iPod Touch 64 GB
- iTunes 9: iTunes LP, organize iPhone Apps, home sharing
- iPhone OS 3.1

I'm trying to download the new software, but it's crawling to (almost) a halt... I think the entire world is trying to do the same.

And don't forget about the iLiver! Not on sale for everyone though.

All in all very disappointing. Why call the media in for a minor upgrade and a price drop?

I guess it's the tradition of the yearly "iPod event"... it was expected to be pretty minor this year.

That's insane... they better work on the battery performance, it's barely enough for a transatlantic flight where you need the display a lot (watching videos for example), unless you can recharge of course.

My thoughts:

- The reportedly planned camera in the new iPod Touch seems to have met unforeseen difficulties. Too bad! (Some iPod Touch covers with cutouts are already on sale.)

- The camera in the iPod nano apparently can't take still pictures. And I suspect it does not have auto-focus like the iPhone camera does.

- The nano radio has quite a few neat added features built in.

- This wasn't mentioned: iTunes 9 now allows nested rules for intelligent playlists! (There's now an additional ... button next to each rule which creates a sub-group combining multiple sub-rules)

- The iPhone software 3.1 has apparently fixed some issues with intelligent playlists, but not all of them...

- iTunes 9 apparently now has a "drop box" folder in its music folder. Files which are copied there will automatically be adopted by iTunes.

Not at all. My 32GB iPhone has less than 2GB of space left, and my library fits only because I've down-ripped some of my music. I may get the 64GB iPhone if it comes out next year, even if it means paying extra for it.

The few people who have nothing else to do for such a length of time away from a power supply can get external battery packs.

I don't see much of a justification to encumber everybody with a bigger and heavier battery just for rare cases like that which can be solved separately.

OK, let me add it's insane for my needs  Wink I have a 32GB iPod touch and I can't fill it. Neither with music, nor with videos.

That would be a solution, but I have never seen such external battery packs (nor thought of buying some). I'd only get them if they were made by apple and not by a third party company. And they should be handy... otherwhise, not the real deal for me.

The weight should not be excessive, of course. Talking about running out of power, my battery has died a couple of times so far... at long car drives, when being on a plane for several hours, etc. Always when it doesn't fit in. High display brightness, not necessarily maximum, consumes a lot of power.

I hope 3.1 improves battery life with Bluetooth enabled. There's a huge difference in battery life when it's on vs. off. And yes I realize it's pretty simple to toggle when I'm not using it, but even leaving it on bluetooth "standby" i.e. not actively streaming music to a headset means cutting my battery life from recharging every few days to every day. I just can't believe it's using so much power when it's technically not even doing anything.

I have an 8 GB iPod touch and I can't fill it. It's about 1/4th full. Since I only have 25 GB of music, a 32 GB iPod would certainly suffice. A 64 GB iPod would be fun, but relatively useless. For me.

All in all, good to see Steve back on the stage.  Smile

I have a 16 GB iPod Touch, and I wish I had instead gone for the 120 GB iPod Classic because of all the podcasts that I've downloaded over the last year.  Confused

Hopefully 3.1 improves the battery life in every way it can. I have a 32GB 3GS and the battery life is absolutely terrible compared to my first generation iPhone - even if I turn off 3G (which is ridiculous. I didn't buy a new phone to not use the 3G feature).

I think Apple needed to get its iPod ducks lined up for holiday sales and Steve Jobs did a good job in that area.

iTunes 9.0 and iPhone/touch 3.1 also delivered when I wanted it - namely arranging my apps on various iPhone displays.

Missing?

Intel delivered quad core i5 and i7 processors yesterday and I'm waiting to buy an i7 iMac.

iLife 10 and iWork 10? I'll spend money there when it comes.

Mac mini also needs a kick up and the quad cores (lower end) would help move that line.

And the tablet in the first quarter of 10.

The you've got a defective unit or you've changed your usage significantly. The 3GS has substantially better battery life than the original or the 3G in EDGE mode.

3G power draw is about the same as the immediately previous model.

Bad mobile or WiFi reception can also drain the battery, since the iPhone will have to crank up its transmitters to maximum power in that case. So changing habits and locations can also have a noticeable effect.

Apple keeps Macs and iPods/iPhone separate. Computer announcements will be made in separate events.

You may be hitting one of the email push bugs which makes the iPhone sync endlessly, therefore quickly draining the battery. How many hours of actual usage do you get out of one charge (according to the Settings -> General -> Usage page)?

I tried to upgrade my iTunes on my laptop (from 8 point something, to 9.0). Totally freaked up my iTunes. Now I'm having to clean install everything. Probably will have to re-clean my whole library. Find ALOT of my album artwork on the internet. Way to go Apple.. thanks.
