To an extent air travel does work like that. The flights where you want to go on may be sold out that day. You may have to take multiple carriers to get to your destination, and you may be booked on two different tickets, especially if there's no codeshare options.

Passengers do pay different rates on the same route, including factors based on the the time of departure, available seats, etc. Who accepts who's frequent flyer miles is constantly changing as well. Delta and Continental may be partners one day, and the next they are not. And asking the airlines "Is anyone else cheaper?" will get you the same result. I don't expect the Delta website to give me the airfare for American on the same route or any other route.

I work for AA and Sabre will price out tickets that include OAL segments (not just AA), and even tickets that arent even connected to AA (for every domestic carrier except FL, WN, B6, NK, ZK, and a few others).... So yes, you can ask me if someone else is cheaper.. Big grin


Dont get me started on multiple carrier tickets... Do you know how confusing it is to explain to Joe-Once-A-Year-Flyer, his wife, and his 4 year old son that they have to claim their bags in TUL (or ICT or wherever) because theres no interline agreement to get their bags checked straight through to Grand Island, NE? Those are the moments that I curse Travelocity..

Off topic, today I had a guy come to the counter and tell me that him and his wife didnt have to pay for their bags because he was a "gold member" and showed me his Mastercard... It was an AAdvantage MasterCard, and it said "Gold Level" at the bottom... but he couldnt wrap the idea of elite status, and the fact that he didnt have it, around his mind.... 20 minutes (and considerable words) later I charged them 40 bucks for bags.

One question I have for you: Supposedly that charge for baggage was due to off set the increased cost of fuel, was it not? So, when fuel prices plummeted a while back, why didn't we see those ridiculous baggage charges waived? Just curious...

So what you're saying is that if I want to get out of paying baggage fees, I should just complain and throw a temper-tantrum until the airline waives the fees so that they don't "lose my business" in the future, correct? And if so, where does it stop? If I know I can get out of paying the bag fees by throwing a hissy fit, you better damn well believe I will. However, this system only rewards the people who want to cause problems, while punishing those who accept the rules. Many of the customers who are paying the baggage fees are your few-times-a-year travelers; the people who select the lowest ticket price every time, regardless of the airline. They have little to no loyalty. Elites and customers, the ones who DO come back time after time, have their bag fees waived (one reason I am glad I will be making Medallion with DL this year). I hate paying bag fees, but I suck it up and pay them. Unless I'm traveling on orders, I don't even pull the "I'm military" card to get my bags waived.

We're sorry. We can't book your flight to Eugene because
A) We sent you the wrong form the first time, and you'll have to fill out the form to where you want to go again.
B) You did not initial in the boxes, even though our directions said nothing about initialling in the boxes, and you must fill out the forms by hand.
C) The fax was too dark, and you must type out the form, not fill it in by hand.
D) You did not include "USA" on your address, because we can't figure out that "Daytona Beach, FL" is in the United States
E) Now that you've finally filled out the paperwork just the way we like, there is no more availability to Eugene. Too bad.


This is exactly what has happened to me while trying to get my commissioning physical scheduled in Jacksonville back in AUGUST. I filled out the forms I was sent the first time. Sent them back. Was told one form was wrong because I didn't initial in the boxes, even though the direction said nothing about initials in the box, and the other form I was sent was the wrong form (Oh, and you can't save these forms because of the format, so each time it has to be redone if not done correctly the first time). Then I fax the forms in and they tell me they were too dark, and I need to come in and fill out the new forms by hand. I fill out the forms by hand at my ROTC unit and fax them. They then tell me not to do them by hand, that they must be typed, and that I must include the country on the address, because we can't figure out that Florida is in the United States (again, there's no block for country). So I've filled out the paperwork four times now, and have yet to get my physical. They can't get me in at Jacksonville anymore. Patrick and MacDill don't have any availability. They're talking about sending me as far up as Georgia. Just to get a damn physical. I'm lucky I'm not trying to get cancer treatment. And yes, that is what you will get when you deal with government bureaucrats (and the ones running the new healthcare will be even worse than the military paper-pushers). I'm still confused as to why people actually WANT this system.

The guy doesn't make policy. His job is to collect the forty bucks.

Thanks. It is a military physical, so there's a little more involved than just a regular physical, but it's still absurd how long I've been waiting to get this. I was supposed to get this physical done in mid-August before the Fall Semester started up. Here we are now over a month into the Fall Semester and I still have no idea when this physical will be scheduled, all because some military paper pusher, who I can guarantee won't be any worse than the the regular bureaucrat running Obama-Care, felt like being a pain in the ass and/or too lazy to move efficiently. What's sad is I'm sure they think they were probably doing a great job too.

Well, first we need to check the death rate. Airlines are doing better than health care in that regard - best guess is that 100,000 deaths a year due to medical errors.

Then there is the issue of paying before you fly, or trying to catch up over the years after a major illness.

And then there are the FF miles. Can you see the local hospital telling you that if your have your radiation there they will give you a free prostatectomy?

Maybe if we can plan today for a T&A between Christmas and New Years ewe can get a discount, but I doubt it.

After the medical bills for my wife and I over the past 5 years I definitely feel that I've hit the Emerald level. I may be Platinum for life with AA (close to 3 Million miles) but that is nothing compared to our trips to the hospital.

No, but airlines do charge more for customers who use more resources, ie those that bring on checked luggage, those who fly First Class and those who fly frequently (price is per ticket, not an annual fee for unlimited air travel).
