Heading into the home stretch of 2009, and this little gem restores my pessimism toward humanity:

And this is a justice of the peace, mind you, not some Shifflett pumping gas at the local Kwik-E-Mart.

Oh, and the blog reader comments are quite eye-opening as well.

Ouch. I guess this guy hasn't heard of Barack Obama.

I doubt that decision will stand for long, or that this particular JOP will last long in his job.

What a load of ....

The "Children Will Suffer" thing is a load of crock too; most marriages period these days "don't work out" so does he refuse to sign /every/ marriage license for fear of putting some hypothetical child(ren) that may or may not ever exist in a situation that may not be worthy of a Disney-esque view of the world (life's not all fun/games/happy nonsense and learning to overcome leads to the ability to cope later in life).

Not to mention there's nothing stopping the couple from having clildren if they aren't married and if he thinks they'll be in a bad situation with a married interracial couple I wonder how much better he thinks it would be with unmarried parents (of any race or combination of races)

I almost want to say it seems like he has a fundamental misunderstanding of how procreation occurs. .

Blech. At least LA is Lousiana and not Los Angeles which was my original translation.

I would assume that's the white supremacist peanut gallery frothing at the mouth at this momentary dewdrop of legitimacy for their beliefs. There are some real braindead people out there - don't they know the world is teeming with hot women of various colors?? Their loss, our gain!!

I read that and was astounded and began wondering what year we were in....
A question though sorta off topic - why do you need a "marriage license" in the US? I don't know about other countries - but in India - you get married and then register the marriage with appropriate authorities....you don't need one before getting married.....

So the local, state and federal authorities know you're married. In the US, married people have joint checking/savings accounts, credit cards and other financial products that they use together with both names. Also, people file taxes (federal/state/local) jointly with their spouse.

Don't think that is any different in India (or any other country). My question is specifically - why a license before when the marriage may or may not happen - rather than registering it with the govt. once it has actually happened?

I wouldn't be so sure. Some of these guys stick around a long time, even when doing obviously atrocious things.

Quoting Dreadnought (Reply 1):

All they really have to do is go down I-55 and I-10 to New Orleans or pretty much anywhere else they want and they will get married. Still, since this should never be happening at all, I hope they are victorious in their suit.

It's also to be done to ensure close kin don't intermarry.

In the USA, a license is required, usually several days before the marriage is officiated, to make sure the participants are (but for some states) a man and a woman, are of legal age or have permission of the parent of the less than legal age partner, are not too closely related and in the past it also required a test for certain STD's before issued. Prior the the mid-1960's, it also prevented interracial marriages in some state (mainly in the ex-CSA's) until made illegal by a decision of the US Supreme Court.

Justices of the Peace are local judges, usually involved in conducting court hearings for minor crimes (shoplifting, motor vehicle violations, tresspassing, minor assault and the like) but also authorized to officiate marriages. Many JOP's didn't have to be licensed attorneys to hold office until recent years in some states and often were appoinited or were chosen to run by local political powers. In some places it was a lucurative post and made deals with the local police to look especially (or set up speed traps) for out-of towners driving at excessive speed in their towns.

In any case, this JOP should immediatly resign his post or if necessary removed by the needed procedures and replaced with someone that will not violate the civil rights of interracial couples. If this person is a licensed attorney, they should have their license suspended for several years or even permenantly revoked for failure to uphold the law.

This guy doesn't have a law license. At least not in Louisiana.

What? If anything, that particular JOP would cite Obama's parents as a case of the inter-racial marriages not lasting long.

Well yeah, but that didn't stop him from a certain amount of success in his career.
