Sad Story: http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/19/puerto.rico.gay.slaying/index.html

Quote:
Juan A. Martinez Matos was charged at a hearing Wednesday with first-degree murder and three weapons violations in connection with the killing of 19-year-old Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado. The teen's decapitated, dismembered and partially burned body was found Friday afternoon on a road in central Puerto Rico. Bail has been set at $4 million, court documents show

Apparently Martinez goes out and solicits same sex prostitutes in order to kill them because of them being gay.

I'm not a "firm" believer in hate crimes, but this seems that it would fall under some level of determination by the courts. Puerto Rico does not have hate crimes legislation, but the US Federal Hate crimes legistlation could have jurisdiction.

Hate crime or not, this is a pre-meditated murder, much the same as the Manson murders. I don't think they'll let him off lightly regardless.

Sounds like a serial killer to me. Prostitutes seem to be a major target of serial killers.

I understand Martinez thought Jorge was a girl. It looks like he dressed up as a girl, went out and met Martinez. So sad in the end.

Very few people miss them or come looking for them

Exactly. it doesn't matter who he was, what his race, gender, or sexual preference is. Pre-Meditated murder goes beyond hate crime. Someone should be punished in a very strict manner regardless of a hate-crime or "regular" crime in this case.

He took a guy and murdered him. Perhaps tortured him first. I don't care why he did it. What matters is that he did.

He needs to go to a small, dark cell and stay there for the rest of what I hope is a long, healthy life, while he slowly goes insane from the boredom.

It is the worst punishment I could imagine for such a crime.

Here's the thing: if someone on this board came on and posted that they don't agree with the Jewish lifestyle and that Jews shouldn't be allowed to marry and that they shouldn't be allowed protection from workplace discrimination, that post would be immediately pulled.

Yet many times, I've seen people say that they don't agree with the gay lifestyle and that gays shouldn't be allowed to marry and that they shouldn't be allowed protection from workplace discrimination. Those posts don't necessarily get pulled.

It's not the mods' fault, per se. It's society's. Society has done a very good job of ensuring that every other minority class is protected from this sort of discrimination. Yet gays haven't gotten there yet. Never mind that there are a lot more gays than there are Jews.

In my high school locker room, anti-gay comments were common. But you never heard anti-Black comments. It's going to have to come down to society adopting a "live and let live" attitude towards gays.

Does the Death Penalty still exist in Puerto Rico? If not, then sentence him at least to a lifetime of hard labour.

Screw that. Take away what he took from his victim, his life. Lets see how Mr.Matos likes being decapitated.

Nope. Too quick. Too easy. Not enough suffering.
