My last visit to the city of Assuan [Aswan] was 20 years ago, which were quite different times back then.
It used to be perfectly safe to roam the city as individual, but (generalizing) I understand that things have changed in Egypt, however with notable variation per region.
Looking for a warm place to spend a vacation in mid-January with my elderly parents, Assuan [Aswan] came to my mind.
Travel to ASW would be by airplane via CAI, thus circumnavigating (one of) the most "dangerous" regions around Qena ...
Any insights ? Advice ?
And, Yes, I am well aware of dress-codes etc. to apply.

Aswan is a great place to go. I have not heard of any incidents lately. Being a city with a lot of tourists and near the high dam security is tight. There are some very nice hotels and also some nice boats with hotel accommodation. The people of Aswan are really very very friendly. Also take some tours and ride a foloukah on the Nile. If you go i hope you will enjoy your trip.

I was in Aswan about 5 years ago. Tourism is critical to the Egyptian economy, and they know it. There is a special "Tourism Police" visible everywhere tourists tend to congregate. I think you'll feel pretty safe - but keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings.

Quoting SOBHI51 (Reply 1): There are some very nice hotels
I know. When I toured the country (and I mean the country not just the beaten stretch between Luxor and Aswan) with my older sister 20 years ago we were fortunate enough to stay at the Old Cataract Hotel having a room with a balcony overlooking the Nile.
But from what I have learned, it currently is closed for refurbishment ...

Surely will do, if we decide & manage to to go Aswan is on the shortlist, but has been a few times in recent years but w/o success..

I stayed there too - beautiful hotel, loved to sit for tea on the terrace.

Few years ago during Ramadan we broke our fast in the special area where king Farouk used to sit, according to our Guide. It is on the right of the terrace if you are facing the Nile and up about 100 meter. The view there at sunset was unbelievable.

I was in Aswan all on my own, I never had any problem. Aswan is beautiful so is the Elephantine island, a heaven on Earth, the Old Cataract is wonderful so is the Oberoi but there are lots of less expansive hotels across from there that are very nice too.
There was a better way to fly. It was called Concorde.
