Should Smoking And Driving Be Banned?

I know that in most places in the world, talking on a cell phone while driving is illegal because it makes it difficult for the person driving to pay attention and drive safely. Today I while I was driving, I saw someone who seemed to be more preoccupied with making sure his cigarette stayed outside the window, than keeping his car on the road. He was swerving all over the place while trying to take tight turns driving with one hand. This is not the first time I've seen this. So do you think driving and smoking should be banned? I think it should be.

Smoking should be banned, not just when driving  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I have never understood why it is more dangerous to hold a piece of plastic to your ear while driving than holding a burning stick that emanates poisonous smoke in your hand while driving.

Someone please explain?

Smoking is already banned from a lot of places, so I would expect to have at least the freedom to smoke in my own car.

Smoking should be banned completely. It costs billions in health care costs, paid for overwhelmingly by non-smokers.

Smoking is a dirty habit.

What they need to ban is throwing the lit butts out the window. I get sick of having burning butts hitting my car, or occasionally coming through my window. I don't' smoke, so I have nothing to throw back. Perhaps I should keep a Molatav Cocktail in the car?

Nonsense! Smokers more than pay for their health care costs by means of the taxes on cigarettes!

I could argue that pregnancy should be banned - it costs loads in healthcare costs!

Not true Ryan. The taxes paid on cigarettes by smokers come no where to covering their addl health care costs.

Lung desease, heart diseease, dental care, general health all suffer or increase considerably when you smoke. The envrionment also suffers with addl litter, tobacco farming and increased levels of airborn particulate/smoke.

It's a dirty, expensive habit that is a drain on the environment and the economy.

Well I don't know about Canada, but in the UK ciragettes retail at about £4.70 a packet (USD $7.30). Out of that, about 90% is tax.

That's a hell of a big contribution to the economy.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure things like cars, buses and planes give off more harmful emissions than burnt leaves and paper do!

Ryan, smoking contributes to environmental degradation. Doesn't matter if it's the worst.

Smokers are adding to global warming by lighting up unnecessarily, hurting the envrionment with addl litter and tobacco farms, and damaging your own health.

Why should smokers be allowed to get lung cancer treatment paid largely by non-smokers, when your lung cancer is entirely brought on by your own actions?

maybe not where you come from Yyz717, but here in the UK, the tax on fags more than covers costs.

For the financial year 2000-2001, the cost to the NHS for treating smoking related illnesses was £1.5 billion.
The revenue earned through taxation on cigarettes for the same period was £9.5 billion.
The numbers speak for themselves...

What about the environmental cost?

What about general health decline encouraged by smoking such as less aerobic capacity, smaller lungs, increased heart disease, shortened lifespan?

Smokers may not want it banned, but how many of them want to give it up?

Ex-smokers tend to be more anti smoking as well. Maybe it's their way of appologising to all the non smokers who've had to suffer their emmisions over the years.

I'd like to see the police ticket (or ban) people (women, mainly) who hold small dogs on their lap while driving.

Banning smoking would just create an illegal black market akin to drugs and other banned items like Freon CFC-12.

Right-on Fordlover! I continue to be astounded by the number of jerks that blithely flick/throw butts out of their car windows...whether moving or sitting still. One of these days I'm going to pick one up and tell them "You've dropped something" as I stick the butt they've just dropped in their ear. Mostly I just immediately pull alongside ( where possible ) and give them a menacing glare so they know they were witnessed. It's not just getting my car hit by a lit butt that torques me-- It's the out-and-out carelessness and lack of regard for decency that burns my a$$. -- The excuse I normally hear is that they don't want their car "smelling like an ashtray"-- Great, the world is THEIR ashtray! -- Some good news though: The NC DOT has a number you can call and report throwing out butts/emptying ashtrays... Give them the plate # and they'll send out a "nasty-gram" of sorts to the owner. It aint much, but at least it raises conciousness.

Or how about the fact that anywhere you go nowadays, the entrance is practically littered with burnt out cigarette butts? When was the last time you saw somebody actually use an ash tray, trash can, etc. to put their used cigarettes in? Disgusting

Ban smoking whilst driving? YES, it is a distraction to the driver.

If smoking in your car is banned, do you think people will actually abide by it? I won't. Why don't we also ban radios/cd players from cars?????? Doesn't that create a distraction? This thread is starting to become one of those "Talk trash to the smokers" threads.

While your at it:

1. Ban drive-thru windows at fast-food restaurants. No eating in the car.
2. Ban children. No distracting Mommy or Daddy while their driving.
3. Ban car radios/stereos. You will drive in absolute silence so you can concentrate on the road.
4. Remove cup holders from cars. No drinking anything while driving.
5. Ban attractive people from walking near roads so no one rubbernecks at a hottie while driving.
6. Burn and destroy all natural scenery that might be nice to look at while driving.
7. Heck, just ban cars altogether  Yeah sure

I'd say smoking while driving *is* dangerous. What if you drop hot ashes on your lap, burn yourself and lose control of your car ?

I'd say the risks are the same as for using a cell phone, or having a pet on your lap ( who on earth does that, itis *so* stupid ! When I have to carry my cat in my car, he is in his cage, not running nervously everywhere )

OzarkD9S> I know you were only joking, but drive-thru windows were never intended to eat while driving, but to get quickly a takeaway meal and bring it home to your kids  Wink/being sarcastic

The ashtrays and cup holders are usually meant for the passenger.

As for car stereos, they are very useful to keep the driver awake. When I do a long drive on a boring motorway, I keep it on, and singing along helps me a lot to stay awake. (and if it's not enough, I stop and drink a coffee  Big grin )

As for banning children, I don't know, but I know I should ban my parents from my car. My father is always shouting "careful there" as if I hadn't seen what the car he warns me of, and my mother.... she talks so much that she succeeded in distracting me enough to have my first collision (minor fortunately)

I don't have any kids, so I could never use a drive-thru window  Big grin
Car stereos need to have a volume limit. I've been distracted while driving when someone elses "concert on wheels" blew past.
If you have something for the passengers such as cup holders, make sure the driver can't get to them!
The problem is for every responsible driver out there there is someone who shouldn't be driving a bargain, much less a vehicle.
Maybe we should just ban STUPID PEOPLE!!!  Big thumbs up

My issue is with the idiots who throw their cig butts out the window. One flew up and came in my sunroof--luckily landing on the back floormat instead of my seat. It left a burn mark.

When I confronted this woman at the stoplight..she basically said "f*ck it..it was my problem" (which is something you probably should not say to angry lawyer).

Long story short...got her lickense plate and then her registration records from the the courthouse...wrote a demand letter--and she bought me a full set of new floor mats within a month.

But the worst are those inconsiderate people who throw their cigerette butts in the urinal. This after all makes them dirty, wet and hard to light.
