Quoting Baguy (Thread starter):
A sad day. Who would steal a sign that has so much to say!
Not only that, but what are you going to do with it? Display it over your mantle? Someone's going to notice.

Quoting KLMA330 (Reply 2): But seriously, who would do such a thing? this is the world's biggest cemetary, and someone has just desecrated it.

There are security cameras there...but it seems like it was too dark to catch anything...
He's just an insane ranter...don't pay too much attention to anything that he has to say.
My attention is waaay more than what he deserves.
Stalin and Hitler killed many people, how many each killed I think is irrelivant here. I don't think Auschwitz necessarily is just to remember the jews that died in the Holocaust, it's so much more than that. It's to remind us of all the atrocities, including those of Stalin, and even since WW2, such as Rwanda and others. It's sacred for that reason, and for that reason no one with a heart should have stolen or desecrated that place. Period.

It has been said by Simon Wiesenthal and other prominent figures that Holocaust should not be mixed or 'put in the same pot' with other mass murders of this century, thus the Auschwitz should be considered as a memorial for the victims of Holocaust only.
I'm sure there are plenty of sick people in the world who like to display the sign as a part of their 'collection'.

Let's all ignore MadameConcorde and not get side-tracked from the actual topic.
The sign is probably going to some wealthy, private collector of WWII-era items, or some neo-Nazi group probably stole it.
Because the sign is so recognizable and historically significant, you won't see it posted for auction or in any official catalog of items available from an antiques dealer. There would be a huge popular uproar over it, and, unlike other items whose provenance and origins are up for debate, the sign was clearly acquired by theft (that alone is enough to disqualify it from most auction houses).
