Well, the revival of the baby is easy to explain. If it was only a brief anoxic insult (loss of oxygen), you kick-start the baby into breathing and circulating blood and then the baby usually takes it from there.
I can't explain why mom suddenly came back to life. It sounds as if they were coding her and they decided to "call the code," which means that you stop trying. But it sounds as if she decided to perk back up again all on her own as they were getting her out of the room.
A few possibilities: 1) they did have her heart rate back earlier, but something was wrong with the monitors that would not indicate that (in the din of a code, you can't trust your stethoscope on a chest: too much background noise and the heart beat may be too weak, anyway). 2) All the cardiac meds they poured into her finally got to their target with all the chest compressions and kicked her heart back into life. 3) random electrical discharge in the heart gave it the kick in the pants it needed. A 33yo heart should have a pretty strong will to keep beating. In fact, they beating for as long as 20 minutes after you remove a heart (for example, for transplant).
But it sounds like the OB/GYN was mystified as well. Look, I agree with her. I don't believe in God or divine intervention, but I'll take the help if I can get it. I've witnessed a few "miracles" myself. The human body never ceases to amaze me.
My advice to this lady would be to tie her tubes and that if she wants any more kids, try adopting. Most people only get to die once in their lives. I wouldn't tempt fate by getting pregnant again.
