Inexpensive Rental Cars In Iceland?

Does anyone know a source for cheaper rental cars in Iceland? I'm planning to go this summer and had hoped to get a large rental car/van to drive at least part way around the island. That is until I went to the Hertz web site and saw that a large car costs more than $500/day!

Any tips for finding something cheaper? FYI - I need a larger car/van because there will be 6 of us.

Try travelsupermarket.com but after just having a quick look on Holiday Autos and finding that sort of price myself I'm pretty amazed. Perhaps the summer rental rates haven't been released yet. Maybe they introduced a special tax on rental cars to pay the UK/Dutch Goverments back?  Wink Seriously though, this is probably better explained by an Icelandic member.

I visited Iceland on my way to Holland 2 years ago and I paid more for a 5 day rental there than I paid for a 10 day rental of a similar class car in Amsterdam (both with AVIS). The rates in Iceland are much higher, but pretty much everything is more expensive.

Have fun!!

I've been to Iceland twice, once for 5 days in 2007 and second for 7 days in 2008.

First time we used Avis and it was about £350 for 5 days for a yaris. Second the economy had collapsed and we got a 4X4 explorer for 7 days for about £300-350 with sixt. Sixt seem to be quite good value and have a good selection of cars.

Sixt has a renault van for around $220/day.

Budget has a Suzuki Grand Vitara for ~$200/day.

Also try Europcar, good as well - they show a VW van for around $260.

The prices of rental cars in Iceland have always been, IMO, extremely high.
$500 a day sounds very plausible. I tried making a reservation at Europcar, and a Toyota Hiace van costed 2800€ ($4010) for six days in June.

I have not often needed a rental car, but it has always been expensive. For a car that can accommodate 6 people and luggage, you need something bigger than a Grand Vitara though.

You should try Sixt first before you give up.

Sorry I couldn’t be of much help!

Thank you all for the great information. I will definitely try out Sixt.
