Wow, I've actually seen all of the Best Picture nominees already. Usually the nominations direct me to the nearest cinema so I can enjoy (or sometimes not) the ones I haven't seen yet.

Really? The Blind Side? I mean, it was a decent movie, but for Best Picture? Eck... I would have really liked to have seen 500 Days of Summer nominated for more, including Best Picture.

I predict The Hurt Locker will win Best Director and Best Picture (it's been racking up awards like crazy sans the Golden Globes, which usually do only a fair job at indicating who will win Oscars).

The Best Original Score category is a complete and total joke, as usual. Though it's much better this year than years past.

Avatar will (rightly) win, I'll predict, 6 Oscars in the technical category, but I do not think it'll win Director or Picture. But James Cameron has stated he always planned for two sequels to cover a much greater story arc in the Avatar universe, so if he makes them and he will--he has two more shots in the future at gaining a Best Picture/Best Director/Best Screenplay trophy.

Out of the Best Picture category I've only seen Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Up, and Inglorious Basterds, due to the fact that my cinema is more interested in showing films like Astro Boy, than Precious or the Lovely Bones.

I was disappointed, but then, not surprised to see that Coraline and Star Trek weren't nominated for Best Picture. I'm not a Trek fan, but I loved the film! I saw it twice in the cinema. The same goes for Coraline, which for me was my favourite film of the year. Unfortunately, Up will probably take Best Animated Feature, although it is an excellent film, it even caused my eyes to water twice. Also, Coraline had an great score as well.

With regards to score, I didn't like Avatar (and I'm a big Horner fan), and thought Star Trek was the best of the year.

I'm disappointed that Saoirse Ronan wasn't nominated for The Lovely Bones, but the Irish did get two nominations for animation. We won't win Best Feature, but probably stand a good chance with the Short.

I thought (500) Days of Summer was a very good film, but could have been a bit better.

Admittedly I'm a total geek when it comes to anything film, as much as I am with aviation, and a testament to that fact is that I frequently track websites that predict who the academy awards will go to, by following a lot of the precursor awards and general buzz. The vibe I've got from a lot of websites is that Star Trek was definitely in the running, and very close. It was probably either going to be District 9 or Star Trek.

But a sequel will come for Star Trek, so there'll be a second chance...

Hooray! An excuse to talk about film score, thank you!  

I thought Avatar had a very good score, honestly. James Horner is infamous for his self-referencing (and in a lot of cases, blatant self-copying), and boy is there a lot of that in Avatar, but of all of his scores filled with a lot of self-copy, I do think it is one of his best and most masterfully made. Plus, I dunno, maybe I just don't seem to be bothered by the self-referencing, because 99% of the time it really does work in the context of the film by itself. But I would also definitely say it was a gigantic missed opportunity.

I'm mixed on whether he should actually get the Oscar (he won't, Giacchino will get it)...if we look at the scores themselves, I don't think it was the best score of the year. On the otherhand, I think Horner deserves all the Oscars he can get to make up for the utterly ridiculous 1989 Oscar season when his score to Glory, often called one of the greatest film scores of all time, and a personal favorite of mine, wasn't even nominated. After hearing that, I simply couldn't take the category with any amount of seriousness whatsoever.

And I wholeheartedly agree that Star Trek was the better Giacchino score this year (though I think The Incredibles or Ratatouille were more deserving of Oscars than anything he did this year, but he's due for sure).

But one thing I definitely think -- this was a very crappy decade for film score in relation to decades past, and 2009, in my opinion, was probably one of the worst years for film scores I can think of. The Best Original Score category has 5 contenders, and I can't even name 5 scores that left a solid impression on me. This was a terrible year for film music, I think.

Then again, this decade did bring us Howard Shore's score to The Lord of the Rings, which I and other score enthusiasts agree is at least equal to the accomplishment of John Williams' score to Star Wars. But I suppose it's all a matter of opinion anyway.

By the way, my apologies for writing so much...this is just me rambling on about stuff I just happen to love to death, so take it with nothing more than a grain of salt.

I'd say you're right. District 9 came out of nowhere and blew people's socks off, Star Trek had been anticipated, and wowed everybody, but not in the way District 9 did.

Personally I thought it wasn't exciting, and predictable in the way he tried to make it sound more 'ethnic'. I thought it was one of the biggest let downs of the film, which I'm disappointed to say because I'm a huge Horner fan. I think the score to Titanic is the best ever written.

Star Trek was definately his better score for 2009, but he'll still take home the Oscar for Up. I thought Zimmer's music was the best part of the God awful film, Sherlock Holmes.

I really liked the Slumdog Millionaire score from last year (the winner, A.R. Rahman), it was perfect for the film, and wholly enjoyable on it's own (apart from that sacrilegious cover of Jai Ho by the damn Pussycat Dolls).

In my opinion Alexandre Desplat had the best score from last year with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (I love the track Sunrise on the Pontchartrain.

Howard Shore gave us the best soundtracks of the decade, without a doubt. The Star Wars scores were a little lacking, but Shore more than made up for it.

And that's definitely fair enough. Have you heard Willow? That's another Horner favorite of mine, and I think he got a lot of influence from that score for Avatar. I suppose the biggest disappointment in it all, for me, isn't even so much the quality of it more than the fact that he was given one full year of total devotion to Avatar to compose the score. He's never had nearly that much time to write any previous score in his career.

I'm not even sure I could fairly judge Titanic on a level of quality. It was a soundtrack I grew up listening to ever since the CD first debuted, and I don't think any single score has made such an impact on my life, and the (at the time) emotional hardships I went through were so much easier when I had such an elegant piece of music to listen to. I would say with sincerity that it is the single most effective film score of all time. A testament to the fact is that it is by FAR the best selling score of all time.

Oh yeah, I've been really liking the stuff Desplat has been composing over the last few years. I highly recommend his score to the 2004 movie Birth. A movie that makes the terrific decision to really showcase his score.

I've seen a lot of movies this past year, and that list of the best picture nominations really shows how bland of a year it has been ... personally, I find that the better movies have come out more recently than earlier in the year.

Avatar, seriously? So its made $2B by selling tickets for more money because its 3D (which is the only reason why its made so much money so quickly IMHO) but it had such simple plot that had absolutly no thought put into it. Special effects were great, but not mind blowing and acting was mediocre at best.

Blindside was OK, but I don't think its Oscar worthy, just seemed to drag on.

District 9 was a huge disapointment for me to be honest, I really had high hopes for it but it just turned out to be another typical Sci Fi movie.

A couple of movies I really had hoped to have seen nominated for Best Picture would have been ...

Paranormal Activity ... so simple, so scary and it really came out from no where and turned into a huge hit over night. Just using such simple filming techniques is nothing new, but I found that it was really the first movie that pulled it off so well.

Star Trek ... JJ Abrams shoud get a nomination just for the fact he pulled off what a lot of the Trekkies said was impossible

Absolutely; what a superb performance! I really liked that film; it had a great style and verve to it. Of course, I haven't seen the other nominees, so it's hard to judge fairly!

As to the others, I have only seen Avatar and Up in the Air and both were very good. I'd like to see QT get an award for Best Director, but when one sees Avatar and the imagination that went into it, it's hard to begrudge James Cameron the nod. It's just a magnificent, hugely imaginative movie.

Agreed. Titanic does have the best score, and my personal favourite.
Cinema Paradiso is up there as well for simply, simply because it brings me to that special place where you feel just how Salvatore feels at the end when seeing what Alfredo has given him. (for those who haven't seen the film DO NOT SPOIL THE ENDING) for yourselves)

There's speculation that Cameron will get Best Picture, whilst Bigelow will get Best Director, which she would very much deserve. For those of you who haven't seen The Hurt Locker, it comes highly recommended.
