Just wondering if any of you guys know or like the music of Gary Numan, who had two number one singles and four number one albums in the UK, and a lot of success in the rest of the world, as one of the first successful electronic music acts at the very beginning of the 80s. Since then he's made about twenty more albums, Jam & Lewis-style heavy funk in the 80s, moving into industrial stuff in the 90s. His songs have recently been covered by Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Foo Fighters and Marilyn Manson, but the current UK number one is by a girl group called Sugababes and their track is actually Numan's first number one, Are Friends Electric, with the girlies singing a little bit over the top. Sounds great, really fresh despite 80% of the track being 23 years old. Bizarrely for a geezer known mainly for robotic moves, singing about isolation and ruining hotel rooms all over the world with blue hair dye, Numan is also one of the UK's top display pilots, in fact one of only three in the country who is a CAA evaluator for the display rating. He flies a Havard at airshows across the country (not so much lately I don't think).

Anyway, I was a fan in the late 80s after hearing a track of his called My Breathing, kind of lost interest after a few duff albums in the early 90s but got back into him again. Anyway, has anyone else noticed that Freak Like Me is in fact Are Friends Electric, and are there any other fans out there?

Count me in.
I seven Gary Numan albums:
Replicas, Pleasure Principle, Telekom, I Assasin, Dance, Warriors and Sacrifice.
I saw him play at the Fillmore here in San Francisco back in 1998.
It was a great show!
I met him backstage after the show and had him sign my 8track cartridge tape of 'Pleasure Principle'.
He laughed at it and said "My, you're making me feel old!"
 Big grin

I have a friend who has a Gary Numan shrine.
He has every album, picture disc, interview, poster, video and other stuff by Gary Numan.

I am the same way about RUSH.  Smile

OMG guys,

I never realised he still released so much stuff. I was a fan in the early 80's when not even in high school!!

I have the albums (vinyl) of Replicas, Pleasure Principle and Telekom.

I think the biggest hit he had in Oz was 'Cars".

(You guys are making me feel old!!)

Superfly, you freaky geezer, I'm a HUGE Rush fan. I think there was a thread here a year or so ago about Rush but I didn't know you were also a Numan fan. Nice one.

I don't know much of his other stuff but the song "Cars" is timeless - probably the only time I've dabbled in electronic music.

BTW, I'm sure you all know he's also an instructor pilot.

Superfly, excellent musical tastes.

Funny how times change. 15 years ago, Gary Numan was as popular as..well, nowt very much. Now look at him. Onstage with Marilyn Manson, tribute albums galore, doing well for himself.

I saw him support OMD at Wembley Arena in 1993. Very very good. Wish I'd seen him back in the day when his hair was 'Numan's Own' and OMD were supporting _him_...

I LOVE Gary Numan. I got his autograph when he performed here in Toronto last year.

I felt a chill when I saw this post...I was listening to "It Must Have Been Yeas" when I saw it.

Cedarjet:
Man you have great taste too!
You seem kind of old to listen to this kind of music unless your profile is wrong .  Smile
I will add you to my 'other info.' respected users list.
20 is not enough.

I just picked up the 'Replicas' LP last month for $1.99 in mint condition in the used record bin.
Great album in deed.  Smokin cool

Cedarjet:
I started the RUSH thread.
Turn on your speakers and click on this thread.
I think Johan added the music for this thread.

I saw the OMD/Numan arena tour in 93 at Wembley as well, Numan rocked big time (this was when I was rediscovering him), OMD were a bit dull. I saw him a few weeks ago at a theatre in West London which was filmed for a DVD release, looking forward to seeing it cos the gig was an absolute stormer, played quite a good balance of old and new (opened with M.E., we also got This Wreckage, Down In The Park, Metal; and a scattering of tracks from Sacrifice, Exile and Pure). My favourite Numan albums are probably Telekon, Warriors and Pure (the latest).

Well, Numan's shares seem to trading at an all time high, as well as a thread on Airliners.net, I heard someone's phone on the train tonight, the ringtone was 'Cars'.

Cool Rush links btw 'Fly, cheers. I remember your original Rush thread but didn't see the Vapor Trails one. Nice to Mr Peart back in the saddle, I don't know how he made it through. God bless him. And yes, the greatest rock band ever.

In case you guys didn't know, there exists an awesome GN fan site:

http://www.afenet.com

It's got a great discussion forum for all things Numan.

My fave. album would have to be Telekon. I Die: You Die: what a great song.

(PS. You forgot The Plan on your list).
