Hey guys I'm heading out to the Big Island next week and spending time with friends in Kona. I did a trip 2 years back so I've seen the tourist spots.
My question is - Is there any nightlife on this Island at all? Granted it's not Waikiki but surely the locals must head somewhere in the evenings? Volcanoes and waterfalls are great but what does one do at night?

Having only been there as a tourist, I was asking a waiter at a restaurant about that over christmas, and he basically said that there really isn't much of a nightlife scene at all. I assume there would be bars in Kona or Hilo.

Uhm yeah, no. There's probably four that I've found on the whole damn island. Gorgeous island, great driving, amazing beaches better than anything on Oahu - but I'd still rather live on the latter.
If you need someone to blame / throw a rock in the air / you'll hit someone guilty

The only thing I ever found was just hanging out at the hotel bar and getting trashed.
When you say you have done the tourist stuff I assume you mean the volcano, but have you done the night dive (or snorkel) with the giant manta rays? Amazing......

My favorite city is Hilo.
The Big Island is a beautiful and tranquil place.
It's not the place for nightlife at all.
Hilo has lots of lush rain forest and isn't over-ran with flashy new hotels. There have been a few hotels that went up in the 1960s and that's about it. Hilo still has it's local flavor and is mostly native Hawaiians.
I stayed at the Hilo Seaside Hotel.
Very inexpensive too.
Make sure you take a drive along the Hamakua Coast just north of Hilo.
Kona just seems like a mini-Waikiki but more expensive.

Thanks for the tip! I try and do that.

Well if you're a chubby-chaser like me, there are plenty of big Hawaiian girls to choose from!
Alas, I'm a little guy myself so there are MTOW rules in effect here
I'm heading over there for a 'Man-cation' with 2 other guys, wives left at home on the mainland. Maybe I'll find a Wahini in a little grass skirt somewhere!
