Of wolves.

http://www.adn.com/2010/03/11/117936...acher-likely-killed-by-wolves.html

A 1st year in state special ed techer was killed about a mile and half outside the village of Chignik Lake, Alaska.

The teacher was apparently jogging with her Ipod earbuds in when attacked by the wolves. Blood evidence in the drag marks and the fact the medical examiner fond that she was bleeding when several of the wounds where inflicted confirm she was alive when the attack took place.

There has only been one previous known fatal wolve mauling in North America (Canada about 5 years ago)

Needless to say there is a push in the villiage to have a wolf culling.

For what? I am of the school that says this is their home too, and its unfortunate that this happened. But to intentionally punish them by killing them off? Totally unnecessary.

Wolves have instincts. They see what they think is easy prey and they act on it. Same goes for the orca at Sea World.

I could go on and on but thats my

So I assume there's also a push to eliminate all the brownies from the Kenai & Kodiak, since they kill many more humans every year than wolves kill in a decade?

Sounds like the mentatlity of people around here, they build a new subdivision in the outskirts of town, forcing animals out of their natural homes, coyote comes around, kills a pet cat that the home owners let wander the neighborhood and then they call for the coyote to be destroyed because its such a savage beast and poses a threat to our safety and way of life.

God, humans are so stupid.

Interesting no one has commented on the dangers of jogging with earphones in place. That's incredibly dangerous in an urban environment (lots of people mugged by thugs they never heard coming). I'm not sure if it would have made a difference here, but she might have heard something before the attack. We do a lot of backpacking, and I would never walk into the woods with any of my senses compromised.

Does anyone know what the wolf population is like in that area? If they are overpopulating, then a culling would simply be good management. I know we routinely have the same problem with the other end of the spectrum, deer, around here.

I never thought of it as far as thugs go, but being completely deaf to, say, cars around you is something I cannot understand why people do it.

Sorry, wasn't trying to make a direct comparisson ... just sounds like the same stories we read weekly in our local paper.

Speaking of jogging with earbuds being a bad idea....the guy from Atlanta jogging on the beach in SC got hit by a Lancair that lost it's prop and was gliding to an emergency landing. He heard nothing, and died instantly (it's hoped) when the airplane tagged him on landing, as he didn't get out of the way (not knowing it was coming) and the pilot had to land someplace (although you'd think the pilot could have ditched in the surf....I wasn't in his seat and monday morning quarterbacking on an emergency is easier than making decisions in situ)....

as far as wolves go.....if there's a pack that's tasted human blood and decides they're an easy target, it's likely they'll go for more. Choices are to round them up and relocate or shoot them to protect the humans who have to live someplace. If it was a chance attack and there's no pack near the village/town hunting, then nothing to be done.

All that said, I don't think there's any way I'd run with earbuds that prevented me from hearing if there was the possibility of wild animals out there looking to make me a snack. At least pull one earbud out to protect yourself.
