Yesterday at 3.45 pm, a 38-year-old woman jumped onto the subway tracks to retrieve her gym bag. This was on the 6 line at 77th Street in Manhattan's Upper East Side - my subway stop, by the way. She froze when she saw the approaching train, and was decapitated. Passengers were evacuated and were horror-stricken as they walked past the torso.

I wonder what went through this poor woman's mind as she decided to attempt to retrieve her bag. We all make bad decisions from time to time, and I think she misjudged how hard it is to pull yourself off the tracks.

I also feel really sorry for the train operator who must be traumatized beyond belief.

From the New York Post:

RIP.

Darwin at its best...

I feel for the family and anyone who had to witness this, but my God, how stupid was this woman? Tragic...

Harsh to say, but there's Darwin at work.

"This is a Bronx-bound 6 train. The next stop is...*thunk*."

What in the world was she thinking? When things like this happen, you have to ask if the gym bag was really worth losing her life over.

I guess one could say she "lost her head"?

Okay that was in poor taste...but then again I never claimed to have taste to begin with.

Cheers,

I wonder if she thought going to the gym gave her the upper body strength to lift herself back onto the platform. Even so, why would she do this within seconds of a train heading towards you? At that station, you have plenty of time to see the onrushing headlights...

I'd be very interested to find out more about the backstory - it just does not compute.

More news - She was a lawyer, wore athletic clothing and seemed to be an overall nice person.

Errata - She was 48, not 38.

I posted this thread because it just doesn't make sense, and given all the forensic skills I've seen here dissecting crashes, wondered what you all thought of this.

Perhaps the best thing is for me to leave it alone and respect the deceased's right to privacy.

I see nothing wrong in posting this, it points out how bad decisions can lead to tragedy. I take the NYC Subway daily know full well it's risks. I wonder how her bag ended up there? Perhaps she was standing too close to the edge of the platform, perhaps looking so partially over the edge to look to see if a train was comming, then the bag slipped off. Now she is dead over her own probable misgudgement.

Agree, sounds like the best explanation so far.

Very tragic... I wouldn't be able to sleep after witnessing that.

Feel very sorry for the woman and her family. Doing that on the 6 train is especially dangerous since it comes so often.

People do made stupid decisions, and before you know it, your life is over in a flash.

Recently A woman was killed at a level crossing by thinking the train had passed, but didnt see the next one coming the other way or something like that. The gates were closed, and yet idiots still think crossings are dangerous..

A couple of my friends came down here to the city to visit during our spring break. I forget if it was yesterday or the day before, but we chose to walk from the New York Public Library on 5th and 42nd to the Met at 81st Street instead of taking the 6 train. This probably would have been our train if we had taken it (if it was yesterday).

May she rest in peace. All the best to her family and friends.

As is most of this thread. Is this going to be a mainstay in non-av? Find people that make a bad decision, get killed and then talk about how stupid they are.
