For the runners of a.net! What are some of your favorite routes in your area? Routine? Have you tried barefoot running or something close to it?

In Dallas, the most popular routes are around White Rock Lake -- approximately 9.5 miles -- and The Katy Trail. I run the Rock every week or so, but have been going through the neighborhoods recently to add variety.

In Denver, I would start in downtown, go down 16th to Park, Park to Colfax, then down Humboldt, go around Cheeseman Park, up to 17th, over to and around City Park, and back downtown. And Wash Park of course.

Been switching between the Vibram Five Fingers and the Nike Free 3.0s. Both are lightweight and close to barefoot. Highly recommend both.

Probably the most popular running path in the South Bay (and all the way up the coast) is The Strand (the bike/foot path by the beach). It runs for something like 20 miles, from the southern edge of Redondo Beach up to Pacific Palisades (I think).

I'm actually going to try and start running (again) after work today. Gonna go up to Palos Verdes, to a nice path right by the cliffs:

When I lived a little closer to the beach here in Daytona, I loved running along the beach (and Daytona sand is pretty good for running on - soft enough to provide cushion yet hard enough that your feet weren't sliding around). I would run about 6 to 7 miles, usually run north and then turn around and head back. Now I just run around the loop in my apartment complex. Not very exciting but the back loop is exactly 1/2 mile so its easy to keep track of the distance.

My left foot is one half-size smaller than my right. Left shoe clunks around alot when I walk; running this way is seriously bad for my footke...

When I saw the thread title I hoped someone would mention these. I looked at some real quick the other day in a shoe store...didn't have time to try them on, but I'm debating retiring my New Balances and taking these for a spin.

My neighborhood has some pretty nice walking trails that run by a few ponds and a spring, although we're getting into goose poop season now and running's going to start getting a little more treacherous.

I am in the same boat: one of my feet is 11.5 A width, the other is 10.5 B. The key is getting a shoe that fits your foot width. Matched pairs are ok as long as your feet won't slide around, and the most important part of your feet not sliding around is getting a shoe with the correct width. Check with your local running club about stores in your area that focus on runners and running shoes. Those stores are much more helpful than generic shoe stores in getting you in the right pair of running shoes.

I would keep the New Balances too. Switching to the Vibrams is not an overnight thing. It will take your feet a while to get used to running with less protection and support. Use the Vibrams for shorter runs to start, then build up to your normal runs. It is a whole lot easier than trying to transition immediately.
