OK, I can understand them targeting some of the US Navy auxiliaries that look like freighters. However, a frigate does not look like a freighter. And they opened fire first. What were they thinking?

"Look, man, a ship, let's take it and become rich"

"No, man, I think its a warship"

"No, they painted it to look like a warship, I am not fooled by that, it is a container ship"

"Okay, lets take it, I'll drive our boat, you shoot your gun"

"Oh shit.... a container ship that shoots back"

"They can't fool us anymore, let's take that ship. Are you ready to climb aboard it and take the crew hostage?"

"Yes, let's do it"

"Oh shit, it is a US Navy warship, we are fucked".

"I told you it was a warship".

Nah, they'll hopefully turn them over to Singapore.

No question about that, but I prefer the old DDGs, like the Cochrane I was on in '69.

No probably about it. I spent years in Yemen and 90% of the males there were regular chewers. Much of their supply came from Somalia and Ethiopia.

I'd be interested - what do you think the initial reaction was on the bridge when the Nicholas got fired upon? Was it:

- WTF?

or

- Oh hell no you didn't just . . .

They clearly weren't. Either that, or they were so stupid as to think "Hey, that's a rather small warship. I bet we can take it and get even more than for a load of oil." Then they got their a$$es handed to them.

According to the report, the pirates opened fire shortly after midnight. I don't know much about ships, but are they totally lit up well in the night? Maybe the pirates couldn't make out that the ship was a warship when they opened fire  ?

The pirates wanted to board the USS Nicholas. Right? They got their wish. They're on board the USS Nicholas. I don't think they were planning on being in the brig though.

When the US Navy issues a press release and refers to the "USS Nicholas" does it mean only the ship itself or anything associated with the ship like helicopters, dinghies, or boats that the ship might have launched?

I can't really see any pirate being dumb enough to fire on a warship; but a boat or dinghy from the ship? Maybe.

Also, if the warship returned fire, wouldn't they use weaponry that would completely blow the pirates out of the water? There are no reports of anybody being injured and the pirate vessel was only "disabled" before being boarded.

This sounds to me like a small boat action in the middle of the night. I bet anybody off-watch on the Nicholas didn't even have their sleep disturbed.

Reminds me of last year when pirates fired a few shots on the Peter the Great, the largest non-aircraft carrying warship in the world, that was returning to Russia after visits to Indian Ocean countries. Needless to say those 11 pirates were not turned over to anyone and are now serving sentances in a much colder place than they are used to.

I think they took possession of the mother ship. Perhaps they should do a nice, slow cruise along the Somali coast with that ship in tow to show what happens when you mess with the US Navy?

The article said they sunk the skiff and captured the mother ship.

Haha. The Russians likely were far less nice than the US.
