While searching the internet on tax laws, I found something baffling: Kansas taxes illegal drugs. According to the website below, 10 states are using similar laws....
How does this work? I don't get how they do this... It baffles me. Anyone care to explain... I read the website, but it still confounds me.

According to the article, failure to pay the tax is punishable with up to 5 years in prison. So any drug dealer who gets caught gets another 5 years added to their sentence.

I live in Kansas and I don't get it. The way it is is that you can go and purchase a "tax stamp" immediately upon acquisition of said illegal drugs, and in order to avoid entrapment and such, you "do not have to give your name" when purchasing the tax stamp...not to mention that the state is something along the 13th largest (geographically) in the US and there is only once place to purchase said "tax stamp" - in Topeka.

The federal gov't requires you to declare income from drug dealing on your 1040. Failure to do this is a crime in and of itself. The gov't has used tax evasion as a major tool in it law enforcement efforts. Remember Al Capone went to jail for tax evasion, not any of the underlying crimes he committed. It's much easier to prove tax evasion than anything else because the burden is on you to establish that the money you have was not income.
