***Self gloss***

Last night, we bought a brand new 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE to replace her 2007 Hyundai Elantra GLS. Got a great deal on it as "repeat" customers. I'll let the pictures do the talking:

So far, in the 30 miles we have driven this car, it is fantastic! Has all the bells and whistles one could ask for, plus unmatched styling for its class. Fuel economy should be great as well, however obviously we haven't had a chance to know how great. Turned quite a few heads driving today, or so we like to think.

But in all seriousness congrats. As much as I dislike Hyundais, few things give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling as that new car smell.

That is, assuming it doesn't smell like recycled PVC and duct tape...

I've been paying more attention to Korean cars on the road and it sure seems that they look like crap as they age. I figure thats either because the cars are crap, or the owners treat them like crap because they are cheap.

All I really have to say to that is Hyundai is a whole new animal now. They aren't the same company they were 5, 10, 20 years ago. This car is really amazing. Note the following Car and Driver article.

Says the man that drives a Seat....??!!

There was a time, you know, when Honda and Toyota weren't nearly as accepted here.

I'm continually impressed by Hyundai. I think they really started to come into their own at a furious pace when they introduced the US-built Sonata a few years back.

Agreed. It's extremely impressive. Congratulations to you and Mrs. JG!

Sorry, but I don't like it. I'd much rather have a Ford Fusion.

Does anyone else think it looks suspiciously like a Toyota Solara?

I recall not so long ago when Japanese cars smelled like cow dung inside when new, would not start on a cold day, and rusted out pronto. That changed too.

I am amazed at the quality and appeal of Hyundai's current offerings; not so long ago, they were a punchline to a joke, but now, there are several in the line I'd quite happily drive. Congrats on your new ride, JetsGo.

To each his own, but mind you I owned a 2007 Fusion up until Feb 2010 and know them quite well. This car, in the 50 miles we have driven it, is FAR superior. And no, the 2010 Fusion is not much different at all from the 2007 minus the addition of hybrid and sport model.

Quoting ABQ747 (Reply 11):

No. First of all, there is no "Toyota Solara." It is the Toyota Camry Solara. The 2011 Sonata takes after the Volkswagen CC and the Mercedes CLS in that it is a "four door coupe."

Thanks. By the way, I should add that I'm eating my words from not more than 5 years ago when I swore I would never own a Hyundai.

Ford has made numerous improvements to the whole Fusion lineup. The 2nd Generations Fusions are far better than the 1st Generation models. It's not fair for you to compare a 2011 model Sonata to a 2007 model Fusion.

I'm quite aware that the Solara is built off the Camry platform. However, most people refer to it as just "Solara." I still say the Sonata looks more like a Solara than a VW CC or a Mercedes CLS. Anyway, enjoy your new car.

Congrats on the new car!

Both Hyundai and Kia have been improving faster than the rest of the industry and I believe that they now represent the value that the Japanese cars did in the 70s and 80s. (I was buying Toyotas and Datsuns in those days.)

I've probably mentioned it before, but I also believe that Ford and GM need to look at the Korean cars as the ones to compete with. Value for the money, range of features, and now styling. Korea is where the competition is coming from for the mass market. And they are gaining market share.

The other impressive aspect of the two brands? The 10 Year 100K drive train warranty. I would probably look seriously at paying for a bumper-to-bumper upgrade as we keep cars in the family for a long time. That upgraded warranty would even cover my granddaughter for her first 2 years of driving! Most impressive.

My friend and I were just talking about them as he's looking for a new car. That's a good looking car. I'm amazed that Hyundai has come so far in the last 10 years. Great warranty (although I'd definitely spend the money to get a decent service contract for extending bumper to bumper coverage....pm me and I'll share the actual costs on those and how to ask for it from the dealer) and decent power.

I hope you guys enjoy that new ride.....

Ah yes that too. I've been lucky enough to be on a day-old 739ER from CO and my school got brand new C172s a couple of years ago. Smell very different than a car surprisignly.

Ten or fifteen years ago, this post would've been worthy of a good ripping. However, after driving a few of my friends' Hyundais, they're actually pretty solid cars. Better, in fact, than some Nissans and Toyotas. They've done a great job recently in terms of building up the quality of their components.

This is why I am eagerly awaiting the next-generation Hyundai Elantra due later this year. With a new 2.0-liter I-4 DI engine rated at around 155-160 bhp (SAE 08/04 net) matched with a six-speed automatic, the new Elantra is going to be FAST and still be reasonably frugal on gas. I'm seriously considering getting the new Elantra when that comes out.
