I'm going to Wacken(Germany) and Bloodstock(England) Open Air in August with some friends and need help looking for some flights and trains. We're leaving on August 2nd. I don't know what city to fly into and be able to get over to Wacken because I can't find a train up to Wacken, and from there over to Derby. Wacken is August 4-7 and Bloodstock is August 13-15.

We're also looking to keep prices down if possible. I'm sure there are some on here who can find those type of flights. We can figure out the flight home, I just need help finding travel to our destinations.

Quoting YYZflyer (Thread starter):
I can't find a train up to Wacken

That's because there is no station in the town
The nearest station is at Itzehoe, from where there are hourly trains to Hamburg.
Apparently there are shuttle busses from the station to the festival:
http://www.wacken.com/en/woa2010/main-info/anfahrt/

As for flights, I'd recommend Easyjet flight from Hamburg to London Luton - a sample flight on the 11th August costs currently EUR22 including taxes, but excluding baggage and credit card fees. From Luton, you can take a direct train to Derby.

So from Wacken, you'd take a bus to the station at Itzenhoe.
Train to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main station)
S-bahn (suburban train) to the airport
Fly to Luton
Take airport bus to Luton Airport Parkway station (£1.50, or bundled into the train ticket)
Take train one stop from Luton Airport to Luton main station
Take train from Luton to Derby
http://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/EMTrains
There are more trains than just the direct ones, where you have to change en route. There are some advance fares of £21, or £40 alowing more flexibility.

Hope this helps!

Myself and my friends found transport from Hamburg to Wacken the most confusing when I went last year. You can get the train to Itzehoe then there are regular shuttle busses from there to the festival ground for a few euros. As soon as you're at Itzehoe you may aswell be at the festival ground already with the amount of metalheads there are around. Also look out for Burger King staff giving out vouchers for their restaurant a few minutes walk down the road. It is so worth having a massive meal, washing your hands under running water and sitting down in an air conditioned environment after 3/4 days in what is essentially an over populated field!

I have a ticket for this years Wacken and flight etc but unfortunately I may have to sell them on as I will be working for U2 by the time the festival comes around. Such a shame, I want to go again so bad! The line-up looks fantastic.

If you have ANY questions about Wacken don't hesitate to ask, and I'll answer if I can! Enjoy, it's an incredible festival and I look back on it very fondly!

After looking at the Bloodstock website, their recommended route is via Birmingham and Lichfield. Given the lack of cheap flights from Hamburg to Birmingham, I'd still recommend the Easyjet flight to Luton, then take a National Express coach from the airport direct to Birmingham. Non-refundable tickets are currently at £8 each, or a more flexible ticket, that allows you to get on the next bus if you miss the booked one on a standby basis is £15.50 - book online at http://www.nationalexpress.com
Then walk from Birmingham Digbeth coach station to New St station and take a local train to Lichfield. They run every 20 mins during the day (I used to live along the route at Erdington), and pick up the festival shuttle bus from Lichfield.

Again, I hope this helps!

Hey man thanks! Does U2 fly from Luton to Aberdeen? I'm trying to go on that Norway adventure with Birdwatching and if flying is cheaper than the train I will definately do it.

Quoting TupolevTu154 (Reply 2):

Damn that really sucks if you can't make it to Wacken this year. :/ The line up this year kicks ass. I get to see Iron Maiden and Slayer twice this summer. You should try and make it to Bloodstock if you can and we'll meet up for sure.

I found a pretty cheap flight for only $688. YYZ-BRU-HAM with Jet and Brussels Airlines.

Yes, twice per day.

Also, Flybe fly from Birmingham to Aberdeen, from £26 inc taxes, which would save you a coach journey. From Lichfield, take the same local train into Birmingham, and at New St Station change for another local train to the airport 0 it has its own station. Also some of the Birmingham - London trains stop there.

All we ask in payment is a trip report - sounds like an awesome holiday!

What's the catch with these insanely cheap flights? As in the price of the baggage.

Of course! I still have to write my AMS-FRA-YYZ trip report from last weekend. I wasn't going to do one but with the AMS-FRA segment being delayed and making us miss the connecting flight and being stuck in Germany for the night and the flight the next day also being delayed, I couldn't not do one!

First few seats on each flight are almost free, when they're sold, next bunch are a bit more, etc   So book now if you want these fares!
And yes, baggage costs extra, as does paying with a credit card, there's BOB and plenty of sales opportunities on board   Flybe does at least have assigned seats - you can pay extra to pick a seat online, or chance it at the airport!
