Even if he suffered a brake failure couldn't he have swerved the car out of the way ?

Ha! I grew up by the Hope Valley railway, albeit the one in the UK

Wonder what went wrong there? I'm assuming driver malfunction as has been pointed out he could have swerved even without brakes.

I love how some of the commenters on that u-tube link are saying it was because there was not a crossing arm. The driver didn't see a effing train across the road, what the hell makes anyone think he would see a striped 2x4??

That looked a little too deliberate to be an accident. Maybe the brakes were out and this was the only way the panicked driver could stop the car? There are better ways to stop a car, especially at such low speeds but the driver could have been too shocked to do anything else. Botched suicide attempt? Insurance fraud? Drunk/high? I'd rather it be any of those instead of "oh, I just didn't see the train coming across the road even though there are no obstructions and it is day."

More on the story here

Interesting to note from one of the railway people that..

But Bob Crowley, corporate secretary of the New Hope Valley Railway, says it's much more common than one would think.

"You'd be surprised at the number of people who just don't pay attention and drive into the side of the train," he said.

Yet it's never happened to New Hope Valley Railway, he said.

Well, that last sentiment sure isn't true anymore!

And now we could have yet another punch line to many a blonde joke!

I saw some of the idiotic posts from folks on youtube that this person must've been a woman. Yeah, I went in another direction. This person must've been a blonde!

Hey, gotta laugh at yourself every now and then, eh?
