Very sad, but, as Garry McDonald said, a release, as she had been very ill since late last year. She was a genuine Australian star - funny, imperious, dramatic - a giant among actors. For those outside Oz, Ruth was renowned most for her stage and TV work here over many years - her forays into movies were few and far between.

I believe Ruth Cracknell was one of the last true, original actresses left in Australia. The current crop of actors and actresses is without any real stars, and the death of Ruth Cracknell is a great loss to Australia.

ADG, Mx5-boy, DASA, I think this calls for a commemmorative and respectful glass of champagne, and a toast to a great lady!
(For the info of non-Australians, she also wrote some magical books, based on her travels in Italy with her husband).
Cheers
