I concur - I'm actually headed there this weekend for a BBQ at a friend's house right in town. Marsha Brown's Steakhouse is a great place to eat. It's a huge converted church right on the main drag. There are a ton of cool little shops, and Lambertville, NJ is a short walk across the bridge - equally quaint. Good bars, good restaurants, great B&B's.
The wife and I saw this on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, and have thought about going ever since. It's in New Paltz, which is a quick drive up the NY Thruway:

We just spent 3 days hiking at the Delaware Water Gap on the NJ/PA border... its about 90 minutes from NYC straight across I-80... you can go canoeing or rafting down the Delaware, and it is a gorgeous area.. If you want a challenge, take the red-dot trail up to the top of Mt. Tammany for gorgeous views across the Poconos and Delaware River.

Wow, those sound like excellent ideas. I was thinking of a weekend trip to Asbury Park or perhaps Wildwood. Asbury Park is going through a bit of a renaissance. Lots of new and exciting things opening up along the boardwalk there. My fiancee and I were there a week and a half ago and were stunned at how packed the boardwalk and beach were.
We were down in Wildwood earlier this month and had a load of fun there. We're about to take another day trip down there this weekend again.

My girlfriend's family has a house in Ocean Grove (the bordering town) and that whole area is really good if you're in the right part of it. Awesome area for a getaway, especially with how warm the water is this summer!

I lived in Ocean Grove for a while during college (Monmouth University - Go Hawks). It's a great area, but remember if you visit that it's a dry town. Good BYOBs though. Asbury is getting nicer, and the beaches are cleaning up, but for a better and less crowded beach experience keep heading south to Bradley or Ortley Beaches. Less to do in the immediate area, but smaller crowds.
Steeler, if you're looking for a good spot, try Long Beach Island. It's my absolute favorite part of the Jersey Shore. A completely different vibe than most places, with a bit more civilized crowd.

I second this idea. One point, however -- LBI isn't the greatest for a day trip. The island is almost entirely houses, and there's no boardwalk or any facilities at the beach. So therefore, if you don't have somewhere to stay, there's nowhere to get food, use the restroom, etc. if you're just going to be on the beach for the day.

I would try Montauk or Block Island ( I know its not in the tri state area). Block Island is beautiful especially to bike around.

I have heard a lot about LBI, and yes, I would like to get out there some day. Heh, the future wife and I are returning to Wildwood/Cape May to pick out postcards for our tables. They're going to be named after Jersey Shore towns (Cape May, Wildwood, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Atlantic Highlands, etc). I can't believe it's 74 days away, well 73 at this point already!

I would agree about Block Island. For a little aviation fun you can fly on New England Airlines from Westerly, RI. Pretty much the only place on this side of the country where you can fly on a Britten Norman Islander.
