Basically, I have a modest collection of 500 CDs, some of them very rare, and some music files in an older computer that are also very rare or difficult to get. I want to back them all up in a brand new hard disk, but while at it organize them and basicallly make a neat library of it.

I admit I know not too much about different freeware or software for this kind of thing. In terms of intuititveness and ease of use or features, which is the best for this task? thanks.

What format are they in? FLAC, wav, mp3, mp4 of some flavor?

How to tag them depends on that - once I know that I might have a few recommendations.

Are you interested in a media player within this software? If you are I would suggest Songbird, which is very capable and will organise files in whatever way you tell it to & is hugely customisable with hundreds of addons.

Like I said, 90% of the task would be transfering traditional CDs into the computer files. THerefore, what is the best format to use overall for this and what is the best format to convert the CDs to these days?

So you're looking for a converter, NOT a manager

FLAC would be the highest quality format, you do not loose audio quality. http://flac.sourceforge.net/

However, forget about listening to that music in that format anywhere outside of your computer.

Otherwise, 320kbps Mp3 is good enough, and it will actually play in any portable device. There is a way to have zero-compression Mp3s if I believe correctly but that all depends on the converter you're using.

May want to use this program for doing the conversions:

Well, I guess I'm looking for both a converter and a cool file organizer.. I thought one would come with the other like ying and yang.

Sorry - I missed that.

Do you have an iPod you want to play this stuff on? Or a Zune? Or your phone? Or stream it around the house to your stereo system?

The "best" format depends on what you want to do with it. And the size of your HDD

I'll worry about where to play them later. For now, mostly play them on the computer and maybe to a stereo system with ethernet.

THe most important factor right now is no data loss or the least possible, and organizing into nice folders of types of music.

So long as you know that the very best format for computer playback will severely limit your future playback options on iPods, phones, etc.

I'll give you a few suggestions when I get home - most of them are bookmarked there, which I don't have access to here

In that case I think you should have a set of files in FLAC format as "masters", since they retain 100% audio quality. And then a separate set of files converted from the FLAC masters, to be used in MP3 players or whatever else you see fit.
