Hi everyone,
I will spend one day in Funchal in early November. Arriving at FNC at 08:30 and leaving at 21:00.
What can I do in one day? Has anyone travelled there before, and can you offer any advice? I don't want to spend a huge amount as I'm on a budget (one day car hire seems to be over 100 euros which is a lot...)

The Horarios de Funchal (the local bus service) are excellent - VERY cheap and a good service. Personally I would recommend Cabo Girao which I think is the second highest sea cliff in the world - it's amazing! If you like going for walks there are many 'levada' walks which are easy to do. Also there are the botanical gardens which are famous throughout the world. I find though a lot of the more interesting stuff is in the North of the island for which really you would need a car (you could take a taxi, but all in it would probably cost you nearly as much as hiring a car!)
Hope this helps - anyway at least you will experience the famous FNC approach - it must be one of the scariest in the world!

Correct. Get yourself into downtown (bus, taxi or shuttle service) and take the cable cars up to the botanical gardens. Very beautiful. Oh, and in the end don't forget to tell your sister you need to go back to the airport 4 hours before your flight because of traffic, so you can look at aircraft landing sideways.
What are you doing there for only one day, if you don't mind me asking? It isn't exactly a major transit hub...
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Just a quick reply at the moment:
Include a visit to the market hall (including the "Fish"-annex) located close to the base station of the cable car. It also is on the edge of Funchal's city center.

Carpe diem ! Life is too short to waste your time ! Keep in mind, that today is the first day of the rest of your life !

Thanks, the cable car sounds good. I'm going there as we had a friends' wedding which has since been cancelled. Flights were already booked so thought we might as well go anyway...
