Photo of the 6-lane bridge involved. Most people still call it the Second Narrows Bridge, it's name when it opened in 1960. It was renamed in 1994 to commemorate the deaths of 19 workers killed when part of the bridge collapsed in 1958 during construction. Of about 80 workers who plunged into the water, 18 died,as did one diver helping with the rescue.

Sometimes i think the news agencies love to use the dramatic "Hero's" Label on stuff like this. What they really are is wonderful, compassion, unselfish level headed men, who used those God given qualities, and talked to a distraught man who with help, may be able to go on and make a positive mark on someone else's life. Way to go guys. You make me proud of you. and I am sure others on here will feel the same way!

So well said. Maybe this poor individual, once he learns how to overcome his difficulties will go one to help other people facing this terrible condition.

Outstanding response by the AC pilots, hopefully others will take their lead and help those in similar distress.
I know at one remove that failure to act can lead to tragedy: my brother brushed off a plea for help from a former friend, who then took his own life. My brother has been riven with guilt over this for thirty years now. It has aged him beyond understanding.
Have driven over this bridge dozens of times, beautiful scenery.

It is good work these gentlemen did. Thankfully they were the right guys in the right place at the right time. In these tough times we need to hear about some of the good things that people do to help their fellow man.

Quoting AirPacific747 (Reply 5): What is it with Vancouver and suicide attempts from bridges there?
Two things.
1.) The weather is a really big factor. Seasonal Adjustment Disorder is really big here. Try living under grey skies with a ceiling of 100' for 50 days at a time in the winter. Plus mental health issues are simply not dealt with well here. Look at the Downtown Eastside as an example of that.
2.) Suicide attempts by jumping off bridges? Maybe because we have bridges high enough?
Yes, it causes much disturbance to traffic. Small price to pay for living here though. Better that than be the poor sod crying for help. (Or the poor sod, like my friend who quietly planned it all out, who calmly walked along the Burrard Street Bridge and lept over the side falling 100+' to the ground below).

I did.. yes it is kind of bad, but the weather here is almost just as bad.. maybe we have just as many suicides here I just don't hear about. Many people here get winter depressions.
