CA Race: Brown, Whitman & "W" Word

OK so this is a perfect example of why political discourse is broken. A tape has come out over the weekend regarding CA gubernatorial candidates Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman and Brown or one of his staffers commented that Whitman was a "whore" in reference to a special deal she's rumored to be cutting with public safety officers' unions. Brown has been campaigning on reducing pension benefits for all state employees and apparently Whitman was trying to garner favor from police and fire by proposing their unions be spared from cuts. But the substance isn't at issue here - now there are just wild reactions all over California by people opposed to the use of this word.

Makes no sense at all. Ostensibly, most politicians are whores in the pure sense of the word in that they cut deals and owe favors to people who pay for their victories. So in that sense, Brown would be correct. In another sense, he's being his typically un-PC self (he's been known in CA for a foul mouth his entire career) and might be forgetting about the whorish deals he has cut with unions in his past.

The Whitman campaign had an opportunity to react properly, but did not do so - they made it about the word, rather than Brown's inconsistency or hypocrisy. Bad move.

"The use of the term 'whore' is an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California. This is an appalling and unforgivable smear against Meg Whitman," said Whitman campaign spokeswoman Sarah Pompei. "At the very least Mr. Brown tacitly approved this despicable slur and he himself may have used the term at least once on this recording."

Pot-stirring PR at its worst - there's no way a successful woman like Whitman is offended by use of this term.

Who was it that signed legislation allowing the state employees to be unionized in the first place?

Where's the republican / tea party outrage that she won't touch some vastly overcompensated unions?

See, you've bought into what their campaign is pulling here. Where is the feminist issue?

: a woman who engages in sexual acts for money : prostitute; also : a promiscuous or immoral woman
2: a male who engages in sexual acts for money
3: a venal or unscrupulous person

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/whore

1. A prostitute.
2. A person considered sexually promiscuous.
3. A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.

Should anyone vote for one of these people based on this word? No - it's crazy.

Your right ! It was the first thing I thought .... We know that Whitman is closer to a RINO.... but I also know Moonbeam Jerry is off the chart left ... a Obama democrat . California is a blue state ... and the GOP should just save the money and forget about it. The only Republicans who can get elected in Kaleeefornia are RINOS who end up being democrats anyway.

Your right they should have found and old employee of Browns, made something up and called Gloria Allred.

It actually was good move on something they didn't even have to go find themselves.

BS. Sheldon Adelson isn't. Steve Wynn isn't. The fact of the matter is the Whitman campaign only ran with this because they had to offset the hatchet job Brown was trying with her and Gloria Allred in a very close election. If you are even starting this thread about this then you don't know much about politics. Elections this close and important get real ugly and with the stakes highest we have ever seen this is actually tame. It was a gift for the Whitman campaign and they used it. Nothing out of the ordinary but Brown has been spewing out nothing but garbage since he never dreamed she could make it this close.

Fact is AGM is right Brown is a complete Toolbox. Is Whitman going to be as bad as Arnie id she wins? I doubt it but this state needs something. It's bad.

Neither of them are remotely close to what the state needs - it's a disaster either way.

I'm making a point about how current practices are part of the destruction of discourse. Your disgreement is not on-topic.

Whatever, they call this out when he has no record on women to attack. They also call this out when Whitman is a woman who fears no-one, much less a little word.

Good logic, two = most. Thanks - duly noted. Largely thanks to the tech industry, there are a ton of billionaires who are not Democrats but qualify more as libertarians or individualists despite having donated to Republicans here or there and not really committing to anything beyond that. So, again, you're wrong.

Warren Buffett, Gordon Getty, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Steve Ballmer, Eric Schmidt, Mark Cuban, Jeff Bezos, Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, the Annenbergs, etc.

Did you follow the Obama - Clinton Primary? It's part of politics and always will be. It's not destroying anything but we do need voters to be a little more vigliant.

Yes but this isn't the corparate world. Politics is a whole new ball game.

Debatable. I can think of some successful women who would be offended by the word.

Quoting Aaron747 (Thread starter):
"The use of the term 'whore' is an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California. This is an appalling and unforgivable smear against Meg Whitman,"

However, this is an overreaction and, IMHO, reeks of "fake outrage".

And the Republican primary? That was conducted cleanly?

This should be a lesson to ALL politicians and their staffs: Never use a word that can seen as offensive as to gender, race, religious faith and so on as one never knows when it will be recorded or the utterance can be used as blackmail or a way to lose a political race or position. Someone should have said in that conversation that the use of that word is unacceptable and if used again, they will be fired. Using the term whore is very offensive to women in general, especially those in government or seeking political office as seen as a put down as to their gender, comparing them to a prostitute and only men can be in control. In our current times of technology and the Internet, as well as microsecond news cycles and any use of any slight as a weapon in a political campaign, one has to be hyper careful with the words that are used. Worse, is that such situations divert the voters from information that will really be useful in their choice of candidates. Instead of talking about how to deal with tax and spending policies, the use of a word becomes the basis of voter judgement.
