Publix Sucks. There I've Said It.

I hate Publix, living in the south now for over 5 years my hatred of this establishment has grown with each year more and more. However now that it is the only grocery store around in a 5 mile radius and on the way to/from work sometimes I'm doomed to go in or face driving an extra few miles each way, which makes no sense for a few items.

-Why is it so blatantly expensive unless its some one off buy one get one free item...and even then they jack up the price so much 2 of those items are still cheaper @ Wal-Mart to buy outright.
-Why the hell is the deli so expensive? Boars Head meat compared to any Chicago Euro/Latin or even some American delis sucks. Its a load of garbage and they charge $7-10/lb of any decent meat/cheese. WTF? For $10 I can get 3-4/lbs of great ham in up north that beats this Boars Head sorry excuse of a deli brand.
-Why does the person at the deli always cut one slice and give it to you and ask if its ok? Yes its ok you idiot, Ive had Muenster cheese before 1000x. Cut the crap and stop wasting my time. Also, why the F are you using plastic foil sheets between the slices so everything sticks. Christ, even the local 15 year old girl at the corner shop in Poland knows to use paper because it doesn't stick and preserves the taste when you wrap fresh cut cheese/meats in it.
-Baggers, honestly this could be partly because its Florida but why are there people who are half in the grave bagging my groceries. 1. You move too slow, so slow that today I almost lost it and told the bagger to move out of the way because I dont want to spend half of my day screwing around the register area 2. You dont know how to bag. Honestly how stupid do you have to be to know that you dont bag stuff such as eggs, bread, soft fruit with a bottle of wine because it will crush it. Also why are you bagging a pack of gum in a separate bag by itself and a jar of cream cheese in another...do I really need 20 bags when it all can coordinate into 2-3 bags.
-Alcohol ID checking policy is idiotic. American idiocy when buying alcohol and checking ID is taken to the next level at my local publix. I buy a 6 pack of Carlsberg, they check ID visually and dont type anything in...as I finish the transaction I forget that i need wine. I go back and 30 seconds later the cashier asks to verify my age again and glances at my ID (!!!) The intelligence and memory of a goldfish...maybe worse.
-Too much customer service, I have to avoid walking down an aisle with a publix employee because they ask me if Im finding everything ok. F off and let me buy my crap. At Wal-Mart you cant find anyone, at Publix you have to fend off everyone.
-Everyone seems to think Publix subs are some kind of special gift from God. Better than Subway but still sucks, Ive had sandwiches made at Carrefour Express for the equivalent of $1.90 that were better than this.
-Get rid of those stupid free weight scales in the vestibule of the store. There is not a time I havent been to Publix where I havent seen someone weigh their airline bags and take up half the vestibule. Ridiculous.

I cant stand Jewel and Dominick's in Chicago but at least the employees there dont waste my time with BS questions. I wish some regular produce store like Valli Produce or even a Shop n Save or something would open up shop next to a Publix and put these yuppie morons out of business.

Yea, theres CVS and Walgreens in the area but its limited selection. I think its pretty obvious since the Vagina cream is across the aisle from Halloween candy and a 2L bottle of Pepsi.

Walmart is maybe 15 minute drive vs. 3-4 for Publix. Extra 20-30 minute roundtrip and gallon of gas isnt worth it to save .60c/lb on Oranges if thats the only thing im buying.

BTW, Screw people who pay with checks these days...and if you have to pay with a check why do you always forget to take out your DL or State ID and have to shuffle through your bag for 15 mins looking for it. Youre an idiot thats why because debit cards do the same thing in 3 seconds.

They cut the thickness to order and just want to know if the slice they cut you is to your liking before slicing an entire pound of the stuff.

They are way better than subway and can cost less with much better quality, and they are huge.

Anyone notice how the attractive places to live, places where one can make an honest dollar attract the economic immigrant whose only objective is to rape and pillage the economy then leave?

We certainly share that burden with the USA and a few other countries!

That's what the asshole immigrants do.

It sounds like the original poster is just a bit too fed up with good customer service. I'd recommend visiting a lower quality grocery store if Publix is too good for you.

Or any larger store back home. Granted, I haven't been to Poland since the mid-nineties so I can't judge, but anytime I go back to the old country, I'm somewhat shocked by the customer service there. Heck, even in Hungary that used to be well known among CEE countries for it's generally good customer service level, is not a problem to find stores that suck. Especially if you go to large stores (Tesco, etc)

Holy hell dude, learn to buy stuff once or twice a week, instead of making thirty trips a week just for "one more thing". Grocery lists help. There are even apps for that on your iPhone, if you're too good for pen and paper.

Why the hell would you just buy Oranges? Or, do you eat out most days and therefore don't cook and therefore really don't need to visit a grocery store, and therefore your post is really pointless because you really don't do jack squat in a grocery store to begin with?

Yes, I have been raping and pillaging the US economy. Running from the IRS, boosting cars every week, taking unemployment, refusing to learn English and mugging natives. Youve caught me red-handed. I cant seem to turn off the sarcasm button on my keyboard though.

I dont think that a footlong ham, turkey and cheese warrants $7.75-$8, and extra $1 for Boars Head when it tastes the same.

Oranges was just an example, I cant be the only one that sometimes runs out of stuff they need mid-week or something comes up and you need to pick up something.

Completely agree with you, its the exact opposite and equally as terrible to not have any customer service. Even on a bad day @ Wal-Mart theres better customer service.

At any rate, Publix is far better than Kroger, and way, way better than all the redneck stores like Bi-Lo, Piggly-Wiggly and crap like that.

Harris-Teeter was nice, but very expensive.

Walmart has nothing on Publix though, when it comes to quality of food. I'm sorry, but I like my tomatos to have flavor, unlike the pinkish tomatos at Walmart that are waxed until they are a mirror and have no flavor. Or their meats. How about seafood at walmart? Awful, awful, awful.

Yes agree, the tomatoes (and really any other produce) at Wal-Mart and really even the regular ones at Publix (unlike the Vine tomatoes) taste unnatural and look the part too. Never bought seafood @ Wal-Mart...you are a brave soul.

I am grateful for having Cub Foods here in MN. It seems that every other state I've been to has grocery stores in which you need some stupid card to get the "sale" price which is equivalent to the suggested retail price. Publix, Kroger, Ralph's, etc... Although I used to shop in Publix when I was younger and I don't recall the need for a card.

What about Winn Dixie? Are they still around? Kash n' Karry?

Wow, I wonder who held the gun to your head forcing you to go in a Publix? I mean, with an attitude like that, I wouldn't expect much good service, if you make it clear you don't like the place. Really, you want to complain how long it takes to bag things? Is 2 minutes going to kill you, really? If you want it bagged quickly, go to freaking Walmart and bag it yourself. Really, why the heck do you go to the place if you really hate it?

In my experience, Publix is a nice place to shop. Much higher quality food than Walmart (albeit at a higher price) and a wider selection of more specialty stuff. I shop mostly at Walmart, but if there is something specific I want, Publix is usually the place. Every Publix I've been in has been much cleaner than 90% of the Walmarts I've been to, and Publix generally feels like a nicer place, rather than a "Get your shit and get out" store.

No card needed.

Cub Foods did, though, when they had a store near me. They've long since closed up shop... I think once there was that rumor that Saddam Hussein owned it, or had a major hand in it, the snooty people around freaked.

Just back from Pubix with the wife. We know Publix's prices are higher than WalMart. However, their stores are clean, their workers actually try to help, they double coupons, they have buy one get one free offers, they give me a senior citizen discount (every Wednesday) and on Thursday they have a special penny ($.01) offer.

Comparing Publix to WalMart is like comparing a Cadillac to a Chevrolet. They both will get you from point A to B, but which would you rather drive?

Publix isn't that bad as it is being projected, but having both Walmart and Publix at a walking distance from my apartment .... there are a few things that I prefer to buy from Publix than in Walmart. Personally I prefer the pack of Tuna salad or chicken salad from publix and oh yes the regular white bread you get in Publix is WAY better than the comparable stuff in Walmart. Also the cakes at Publix are much better.

To summarize, Walmart is my preferred place of shopping however Cakes, bread and tuna/chicken salad I would rather have it from Publix.

These range from union stores to non-union, private owned independents to corporate conglomerates.

I take it that is not a normal thing in other parts of the country?
