Hi everyone

So it seems like I may have lost my iPod touch which I used for the last year during my residency. I had a plan in a year, that when my contract ran out, I would end up purchasing a smartphone and it seems unfortunately that I'm gonna have to make that purchase sooner rather than later. So I have a couple of questions to throw out to you guys that might help me pick the right phone.

First off, I'm VERY happy with Verizon and have no idea if/when the iPhone will be coming to Verizion. Either way I don't plan on leaving Verizon:

1. My main question is between Blackberry vs. Android. This is important for me as I tend to use a lot of medical apps, and while both pale in offerings compared to the iPhone, would an Android phone be the better bet?

2. Is it true that all Androids are not created equal? And if so, is there a way to upgrade firmware down the line? Also how do android users get/download their apps?

3. How are the quality of non-medical applications on Andriod/Blackberry? Are they improving as the user base also grows?

4. Blackberry tends to have a less sophisticated web browser, is this the case in the new version of Blackberry OS?

5. The Subjective: So which in general is just a great overall phone, and any suggestions on a particular phone?

Thanks for your help!

Yes. Not all of them can support Flash. I know that the Droid and Incredible can, but others like the Eris cannot due to hardware. (I don't know if Adobe has released Flash for Droid, but I'll look) If you want a physical keyboard, go with a Droid 2 or Droid X (I think both of those have gotten larger keys in lieu of the all but useless D-pad my Droid has). If you don't need the physical keyboard, the Incredible should do fine.

I'm very happy with my Droid. Verizon can be a bit slow with software updates, but other than that pretty much everything is great. I don't care much for Apple and their walled garden approach and Blackberry seemed a bit too locked down for me too. If you need to be hardcore corporate, Blackberry might be a better choice (though that may change), but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Android to anyone.

The Android Market, apps arranged in categories, searchable. If you've downloaded the Barcode app, often web pages online have a 2d barcode that the phone can scan, as a link to the app in the market.

I have an HTC Desire, and quite simply it's the best phone out there at the moment. I work in tech support, and out of our team of 16, 8 have the Desire (plus the manager's girlfriend), and no iphones.

A colleague had the HTC Desire, he lasted 4 months with it then sold it. He said it was a great phone, but he couldnt make it through a day without having to charge it, so it had to go. He has previously used iPhones and Blackberries, and is now looking at getting another blackberry again.

I personally have a Blackberry Bold 9700, and its a great phone, although the number of apps is rather dissapointing (but improving - slowly). The browser on the 9700 is basic, but functional, but newer phones running the new software have a much improved web browser.

So, you could say that it had a lot to be desired. However, that seems to be a basic complaint of most smart phones. I dunno, but I guess if people used it more like a phone rather than [/i]a replacement laptop[/i], it wouldn't be so much of a problem.

Mine will last easily 3 or 4 days, if I turn off the wifi, 3g, and everything else that's not needed in standby, so it still works fine as a phone.
The GPS really does drain the battery though, full to empty in 6 hours.

kind of defeats the point of having a smartphone then. My blackberry will last 3-4 days with GPS, 3G and various apps running in the background...

Verizon is getting the iPhone in a couple of months... I'd say late January at the earliest, late May at the latest (yes, that is a large window, but Apple does not give details out in advance).

Still, I'd recommend Android, no contest.

In addition, while I know market share is not the only measure out there, and disregards other major things such as user satisfaction, availability and capability of the platform, etc, check this out: http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1434613

The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.
