Is there anyone else here who feels that "Saturday Night Live" has really gone down the tubes? Aside from the original cast (Dan Ackroyd, Gilda Radner,
Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, etc.) in my personal opinion, the subsequent
seasons and casts reveal to me a show where the skits are simply not funny,
they run on much too long, and the actors seem devoid of any real talent or charisma. This may seem harsh, but after watching numerous shows off and on, I have to admit I and my friends have never laughed once at the writing and performances. For example, we happened to catch the show a couple of weeks ago, where Kirstin Dunst (Kirstin Dunce) was the guest host. It was absolutely embarrassing to watch her make an ansolute ass out of herself.
I've seen better comedy performances in a high school/college play.
Perhaps NBC should really take a long hard look at producer Lorne Michaels, and come to their senses and give this dying show a major overhaul. Is there not ever an instance during rehearsals for this show, where cast, writers, and the producers KNOW the material is not working? That it's just not funny in the least? You'd never know from tuning in.
I really like the whole concept of "Saturday Night Live", but this show is in dire need of new producers and exceptional writing and talent to really bring it off.

I thought it had gone down the tubes a couple of years ago, and has made a good recovery now. I've been pleased with the shows over the past year or so.

Canadi>nBoy, I couldn't agree more! I used to watch SNL without fail every Saturday. Mind you, I was younger, and that might have something to do with it, but the current cast is for the most part not funny. They've seen the departure of many fine actors over the years, and new, conceited and terrible actors to replace them. There's something lacking in most of these new cast members. They just don't seem like genuine people anymore.
Anyways, couldn't agree more with you CB.

Mad Tv has taken its place. That show is pretty funny. I used to watch SNL in the early 90's when Farley,Miller and others were around. I don't even bother with it now.

Personally, I have never found Chris Katan exceptional in the least. He is amusing, for the first 2 minutes, then.....like everything else on that show, he just drifts off. And, is it just me, or has there always been way too much of a politically satiric element on SNL? Now, being Canadian, perhaps I am not
"getting it" in terms of the heavy dose of political satire, but there ARE other elements from which you can create great comedy.
Lorne Michaels (producer) you may be a Canuck, but I'm afraid it's time to pass the torch on to someone who can somehow re-create the innovative
element that was present on SNL so long ago.

This season of SNL is horrible. It's become like Mad TV which I also really dislike. I don't bother watching those Saturday night comedy shows anymore. SNL used to be great in the 90s.

I agree that SNL has pretty much sucked since the departure of the original cast but there have been some bright lights occupying subsequent casts. The best of these, IMHO, was the peerless Phil Hartman. What a comedian! His work on SNL and on The Simpsons was nothing short of brilliant. Molly Shannon was also pretty good as are Darrell Hammond, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and Rachel Dratch in the current cast. As for Will Ferrell leaving, goog riddence. Aside from his Dubya parodies, I never found the guy to be one bit funny. Anyway, just my opinion.

CB, I in fact like the political satire that goes on. It's shows like that which keep me current with what's happening in American politics! haha. I guess I have to rely on David Letterman for that now.
Will Ferrel was in fact excellent. I liked Molly Shannon, but I CANNOT stand Jimmy Fallon and his pathetic, wimpy smile. The guy can't act, and unless he has some talent in writing (not apparantly, going by how poorly written SNL is), then he should be sacked.
We always have the Comedy Network which airs old SNL shows, and honestly, those make me laugh!

Will Ferrell is leaving, which means no more Celebrity Jeopardy skits...which are my favorites...he plays Alex Trebek so he's irreplaceable for it...RIP Celebrity Jeopardy...

LOL....no, I am not just realizing this, I am now just expressing my opinion.
Hey, Captaingomes, I agree, the Comedy channel has much better offerings if you're looking to laugh. If you want to see (in my opinion) absolutely brilliant comedy writing and acting, then go reeeaaalll retro and watch "Burns & Allen" or "Your Show Of Shows" with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coco. Way before my time, but I tell ya, these shows are priceless! Even re-runs of the old
"Carol Burnett Show" crack me up.
I have caught some re-runs of the old Canadian show, SCTV. Sadly, a lot of the material just doesn't hold up, hasn't aged well. But...."Edith Prickley" and
"Lola Heatherton" still make me laugh. Remember when Andrea Martin, alias
Edith Prickley, did her spoof of "The Miracle Worker"? Man! that is hilarious.

HAHA, you are so right about SCTV. About 80% of it is terrible, but there are the odd skits which are hilarious! Forgive me, but I don't know those characters you mentioned by name. I do like for instance the Great White North, but it gets tiring. I also like that cooking show with the Italian chef (forget his name). I think I'll have to watch SCTV today and see if anything funny happens.

I liked SNL a couple of years ago with Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, and Will Ferrell. In the current show, I like Anna Gasteyer, Rachel Dratch, and Weekend Update (Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon in one of the only roles I like him in, besides the IT guy). SNL seems also to depend on the guest host a lot too (I agree Kirsten Dunst couldn't act her way out of a paper bag when she was on it).
MadTV was much better a couple of years ago too. Nicole Sullivan was awesome, and it sucks Alex Borstein is gone. I like Mo Collins, Debra Wilson, and two people whose names I forget (blonde girl who plays the retarded twin and geeky Stuart guy).
I guess I'll have to go out on Saturday nights now!
