This has just come up on ITV teletext ( http://www.teletext.co.uk/news/story.asp?intArticleID=37756&intarticlenumber=14&intRegionID=19&intSubsectionID=1&From=I&indent=2). NB that link probably won't work shortly, so here's the story:

A man who spent 11 years of his life in jail for a murder he did not commit has been charged £37,000 for bed and board.

Michael O'Brien was offered £650,000 compensation - after living expenses were deducted by Home Office officials.

Mr O'Brien, 34, of Cardiff, who plans to contest the award, said: "I would have ordered caviar and chips if I knew I was going to be charged."

One wonders what Stefan Kiszko would have had to have stumped up as he was imprisoned for an even longer period. Are HM Government that pressed for cash that they need to resort to this?

Well, he's still almost a millionaire (in US Dollar terms). If he handles his money right, he's set for life.

You know I don't agree with this, if they wrongfully imprisoned him they should eat the costs.

Now if we would charge Room and Board for somebody who actually did do it....Then we would be going somewhere.

Not only should they eat the cost I reckon they should also compensate more than just 600k. imagine his reputation damage... the time he spent in jail and the amount he suffered....
