Hey Now! Stern Staying At SiriusXM!

Hey Now!

http://blogs.ajc.com/radio-tv-talk/2...nother-five-years/?cxntlid=thbz_hm

Five year deal, no financial terms disclosed. His show will also become available on the SiriusXM apps for smartphones and the iPad as well. He'll also have a more "flexible" schedule, which I guess is one way to say that he'll be taking more days off (I'm sure that's going to irk Chris Rock as well as the "fans" on Stern Fan Network.).

He's pretty much made it clear that this is the last five years he's doing the show.

Now all that's left is for SiriusXM to resign Robin, Fred, and next year's Opening Day Starter for the Mets, Gary Dell'Abate. If I remember correctly, everyone else on staff is contracted through Howard's operations.

I was planning on staying with SiriusXM even if Howard left, as I enjoy a number of other channels on Sirius and even if Howard left, I'm planning to eventually switch from the Sirius service to XM. I've got an older receiver that I've had for three years (Stiletto 100) and while I do have the Best of XM package on my subscription, it does not include all of the NHL play by play channels, so I'm not always able to listen to games I want to listen to. I may wait to see what new units are on the horizon, but I'm liking the SkyDock and have been looking at it for quite awhile.

I was expecting him to re-sign, but I was thinking it would have been done as the result of several million subscriptions being canceled in the first week or two of January and SiriusXM panicking and giving in to whatever demands that were the sticking point. It is good that the deal got done before the last week of live shows for the year.

Baba Booey to you all!

Great news! Some of the best moments of his career have happened since 2006- the BabaBooey pitch, the Revelations show, Sal and Richard's prank calls, the Artie and Gary roasts...

Interesting to hear he'll have a "flexible" schedule, but happy just to hear he'll be staying on. Now let's hope Artie gets well enough to return, I've missed him a lot!

Ho Hum...I expected his recent bluster was just his usual negotiating tactics - it's not like he had that many other options if he left satellite radio. For me, I had Sirius before he got there, and I would have kept it if he left - in all the years he's been on the air, terrestrial and satellite, I don't think I've ever spent more than five minutes listening to his stuff.

SiriusXM is a great place for him!

Since I don't have SiriusXM I will be sure and not be subject to hearing him as I tune my over the air radio.

Awesome news!! The only reason I got Sirius was for Howard. I love the prank calls, they are the best. I never would have thought he was going to do another 5 years though?

I thought he's do two, maybe three years; five years is a bit surprising.

For every person who doesn't like him, there's plenty of others who do. He's made a career out of being controversial, and while he's not everyone's cup of tea, he's got a loyal and sometimes rabid fan base. I never got to hear his show until he came to Sirius, as none of the local radio stations here in Atlanta carried him, so I got my Howard Stern fix by watching the show on E! that morphed into the Howard TV channel that OnDemand offers.

The entire Artie Roast show was classic. That show was so wild and crazy that they've never done another night time show since.

Here's my top 5 moments from the first 5 years:

1. Artie Roast
2. Sour Shoes Prank Calls to Steve Langford
3. ETM Zero Point Zero
4. Artie vs. Teddy
5. Baba Booey Roast

Earlier this year I lost the Artie Roast, the Sour Shoes Prank Calls and the ETM Zero Point Zero when my Stiletto had an issue that required me to do a device recovery that deletes all of the recorded content.

In honor of the new contract, Howard needs to have another roast, perhaps it's time to roast the Martian, I mean Fred. Sure the Rev. Bob Levy burned his bridges with the show, but there's plenty of other comics that could serve as the roastmaster for the roasts.

I was surprised by the contract's length too, which leads me to think the devil might be in the details. We already got the heads up about "flexible" schedules in the future. What if it turns out to be two years of the current schedule, two years of a reduced schedule (3 days a week, Summers off etc..) and then the final it's an entire year of "the best of".

I'm glad he's staying, even though the show has evolved it's still a 22 year habit that I find hard to break. Even if he was going to leave I decided I was going to keep Sirius for Pearl Jam radio!... Sirius 17, Pearl Jam radio is the best thing Sirius has ever done IMO.

Let's just say that he didn't like the way he was being treated by Tim Sabean (who's in charge of programming for the Howard channels) and by Howard and quit Miserable Men in late April. He had started to make more appearances on Opie & Anthony and was trashing Howard on their show, which is not a good idea when Howard could have easily pulled the plug on Miserable Men. Then he was supposed to have Jim Norton on Miserable Men one night and Tim Sabean put the kibosh on that even though Sirius and XM are the same company (I guess he didn't want to risk upsetting Howard.) and this got on Twitter via Bob Levy and Jim Norton. He got upset when the amount of plugs he and the Killers Of Comedy had at the end of the Howard Stern Show were reduced and as a result, led to the Killers Of Comedy tour ending because many of the gigs were dependent on the plugs on Howard's show (Those plugs weren't the only ones trimmed.). The Artie suicide attempt played a role as well, as right before he quit Miserable Men, he blamed Howard for Artie's suicide attempt and quit the next day (money is rumored to play a role in his resignation since he wasn't making as much money since the plugs for his gigs as well as the Killers Of Comedy gigs dried up along with new bookings). Since then, he's been making appearances on O & A only. Anytime anyone calls into the Miserable Men show and asks about Bob, Shuli just says that he "moved on" and doesn't address it beyond that.

ANY radio performer doing "prank calls" to unsuspecting callers is lying. It is ILLEGAL.

All those wacky morning zoo shoes that do prank calls are producing those bits with actors.

I think Howard is great. Ironically though I feel like his show started to lose its luster when he went satellite. In broadcast radio Stern was constantly pushing the envelope. Obscenity, profanity, lewdness, he was daring! He was constantly at odds with the FCC, with his own management, with other personalities and celebrities. I guess we all really wanted to hear what it would be like without censorship. Years later... Howard gets his wish! He has a venue that is totally free of censorship, you can say or do whatever you really want. Now the challenge is gone. Now the angst, the rage, the "wall of censorship" is gone. He can do whatever he wants. There is no struggle. No man vs. society conflict. What challenge is there anymore?

Not entirely correct. In order to air the prank calls, they have to get permission from the person that was the target of the call. There's no telling how many great prank calls have never seen the light of day because they could not get permission from the person they called. In addition, in some areas, you can record a person without their permission.

I've got them on my computer already, as I "found" the Howard TV segments of them on the Internet.

I've got the Best Of XM package which includes the O & A Channel, and one day I tried to listen to them and I must have turned in during a particularly boring segment, as I just didn't get it. To each his own... Anyway Howard doesn't give those two a second thought. If he really wanted to, he could have easily demanded their firings (something he had the opportunity to do back in the K-Rock days when they were doing afternoons), but he doesn't want to cost people their careers unless they've done something to anger him. The only Howard 100/101 personalities that O & A have been able to rile up is Bubba The Love Sponge, whose contract is about to expire and doesn't look to be re-signing as he's got his "other situation" lined up to do a two hour uncensored show on RadioIO after his four hour terrestrial show. At this juncture, I don't see him taking any contract offer from Sirius.

I have SiriusXM in my car, have had it since about a week before Stern came on the air with Sirius, and I have a 40 minute commute each day to work...I've listened to him for a total of 8 minutes. Easily avoidable! There are so, so many better shows on SiriusXM (the best being Covino & Rich in my opinion)
