From Wikileaks
A UN high official complained about the top quality of Norway's field hospital in Chad. It was to fancy and led to Russia declining to take over the mission and move their hospital in. The Russians aparently felt that they could not compete with the quality.
As a result, the mission in Chad, helping people there with medical services was not continued. The Norwegian government got so furious about the UN's reaction, Russia did not want to and no other country either...
This is just so silly. The important thing should be to help people with whatever equipent you have.
Norway was also severly critisised for Norway's sucessful drilling for water wells near the hospital. Apparently the sucess of finding water and the general lack of water could spark conflict.

That is, sadly, a good point (strictly from a security perspective).

I find the above so ludicrous, that there´s got to be more to the story. While a lot of the stuff being known through Wikileaks is true, a lot is hearsay or notes taken on scraps of paper by 4th rate "agents".
A lot of the Wiileaks stuff has to be taken with a grain of salt and I believe this is one of those things.

There is a an argument that the "western aid community" including the UN has done nothing but harm to Africa and other poor regions. 90% of this "aid" probably goes to salary and travel cost of westerners.
Maybe if the Chinese had built a factory there, the people could buy their own medicine.

The difference betwen the UN and the Mafia is:
The Mafia is much more organized.
the UN mission in Kosovo was a waste of world wide tax payers. almost every thing failed. The biggest concern was the Minorities, but the economy and the social life of Kosovo was left aside. 95 % of the Kosovo population suffered from the bad management.
And the worst thing ever happened was in Bosnia were the UN failed protecting civilians from the Serbian Military.... many were killed....

Quoting ronglimeng (Reply 6): Yeah, I'm with AR385 on this one. I looked at the OP's link but of course it was in Norwegian. So far I can't find collaborating info in English.
