Time featured an article about the top 10 gadgets of 2010, full article can be found here

1. Ipad: When any company sells 3 million of anything then you know its going to be a hot product.
2. Samsung Galaxy S:
3. 11" Mac Book Air:

Surprised that the IPhone 4 only made 6th place of popular gadgets of 2010, maybe the reason the IPhone 4 wasn't number 1 because of the problems with the antenna meaning signal loss and dropped calls.

One article suggests that the worst technology gadget of 2010 was the Microsoft Kin.

Does anyone own any of the top 3 gadgets, or any of the duds.

I will admit that I'm not an Apple fan by any means anyway, but I agree with CNN on the Iphone 4 being a candidate for fail of the year. Several colleagues and friends have it, and whenever I try to call them, I hardly understand a word they're saying (before the connection finally breaks).

Gotta love how CNN puts it:

Quote:
The newest iteration of the wildly popular smartphone was released in June.

By all standards, it's been a huge success. All standards except one.

Some people couldn't actually use it for phone calls.

OK, maybe that's an overstatement. But the Grip of Death (caused when users covered part of the antenna in a band around the phone's edge) was real -- and a big glitch in the device's rollout.

First Apple said the problem didn't exist. Then they said it was a software issue. Then they kind-of admitted it existed and gave away free cases to help. Then, they said it doesn't really exist anymore and stopped giving away the bumpers.

I'm happy with my new HTC Desire HD running on Android 2.2. Didn't find too many things yet that would annoy me.

As for the other items - I never quite got the whole story behind Google Wave / Buzz / Whatever.

Can't say too much about the rest of the list.

That would be an issue with the Carrier, not the phone. The iphone works perfectly well on a good carrier. AT&T works fine for me. Of course I don't live in NYC or SF. those places have so many users that they have some issues.

As an Engineer, Antenna Gate was blown way out of proportion, and honestly did little to slow sales of the phone.

The Kin was just wrong on so many fronts. I don't thnk Microsoft quite realizes how bitter they made everyone with Vista and even windows 7.

I don't think the IPAD should be number 1. it lacked a camera and was generally overpriced.

I have both the iPad and the iPhone 4. The iPad is a trend-setting device. The battery life is amazing.

I have not had the issues with the iPhone 4 that others have had. I placed a case on it from the very beginning. I can't see why one would not do so, the device has glass on both sides. One drop, and that's it I guess. Battery life is much better than it was on the 3G/3GS. I usually use the phone with a hands-free. Maybe that is why my dropped calls are very few.

The article about the worst gadget I like the best is:

Quote:

AT&T 3G MicroCell

Injury, meet insult. Even after carpet bombing America with Luke Wilson commercials, AT&T couldn’t shake its reputation as the “dropped call” network. So many saw it as an admission of guilt when the company released the 3G MicroCell, a $150 wireless device that promises to improve your reception by leveraging your home Internet connection. While the MicroCell mostly works as advertised, asking users to buy a $150 accessory, bring their own connectivity, and still pay AT&T for the minutes they use is the definition of chutzpah.

You see the thing I hate most about these gadgets, is their ability to get users to keep their contracts for problems nothing to do with the user.

Vodafone are offering one of these free of charge if you struggle to get a signal at home. However, remember that normally if you don't get a signal at home you can cancel your contract without question. So Vodafone ship you one of these, and suddenly there is no excuse, and they don't have to cancel your contract.

Very crafty and sneaky.....

Almost half of the gadgets on there are Apple.

They must be doing something right.

Just tell Vodaphone to pay for your broadband internet connection and electricity to run the modem and the microcell, and call it even, otherwise they can put their contract where the sun doesn't shine...

My only issue with the iPhone 4 is that its sensor is over sensitive and my cheek somehow manages to press a few buttons while i'm on a call, meaning i might mute, end or even start a conference call without my intention to do so. I noticed that this problem was greatly reduced with the software update, could be coincidence, or could be a problem fix. The retina display is incredible on the phone, and the screen quality is by far the best handheld screen out there.

I couldn't agree more. Everything from image to marketing to quality products to integration between their products is cutting edge and way ahead of the competition.

Over the past year, I've driven from SFO to NYC, down to Key West, through Ontario, Texas, and around the midwest. I've had iPhones since they were released in 2007. I've owned the original and two 3GS's. In all of that time, through all of the cities, with all three separate iPhones, I can say categorically that AT&T is complete and total shit.

Just the other day, I was driving in Michigan. From the west side of Detroit to Chelsea, Michigan (along an interstate through cities of well over 100k), I had no service whatsoever. Yesterday, I was in the center of downtown Madison...literally one block from the state capitol building...and despite seeing 3 bars and "3G", I had no data connection whatsoever. No email, no internet, nothing. Every attempt to connect returned a message that it "could not connect to the internet".

Over the past few weeks, approximately half of my calls have been dropped. Usually, my attempt to call back resulted in a "CALL FAILED" message.

All around downtown SFO, my iPhone 3GS was simply unusable. I had no phone.

Getting the iPhone to work well on the AT&T network is like getting a Ferrari to run well on maple syrup.

I cannot wait to jump ship to another carrier when it becomes an option.

The Iphone prximity sensor has failed (ask for a replacement OR your cheek and ear are very cold so the sensor cant measure the heat on your skin and the buttons for loudspeaker/keypad/etc are not hidden automatically.

Happy new year
